Older dogs need MORE protein in their diets than younger dogs. Why? Because their bodies have a harder time taking in the protein. Having more available allows for a better chance of nourishing the animal. Older (and false) wisdom claimed it was hard on kidneys. Just not the case. You are not strictly feeding your dog a protein diet, you are merely increasing the amount available.

An older dog (like an older person) needs appropriate amounts of protein. Since typically an older dog is less active than a younger dog, you will need to feed a senior formula to them. This formula will have a higher protein ratio to calories. Also, some dogs have a low tolerance to high protein formulas; so watch your dog and if you see runny stool or other problems, you may have to back off the level of protein.

Old evidence thought an older dog needed less protien. Now they have reversed this theory. If the dog is not suffering from any other conditions I would buy the best food I could and feed that. With supplements, Missing Link, and digestive enzymes.

the new evidence switching the protein recomendation of low protein for seniors to higher protein matches the "streetwise" advice that has many whippet breeders switching older dogs to puppy chow as they live longe & thrive better. We thought at first this was a breed thing.......
the why according to the breed wisdom is their digestive system becomes less effecent (not a scientific theory

Older dogs need less calories, but a good balanced diet. They now make dog food for older dogs.
