UNF is for Unified National Fine
Unified NAtional was standard developed a long time ago to so that different nuts/bolts and other machine parts would work with those from other manufacturers.
Fine indicates a closer thread spacing/ more threads per inch than its cousin- coarse.
2B is the most widely used tolerance which allows the threads to work even with some dirt or debris on them. 1A and1B are very loose threads which dont have much practical application in todays world. 2A and 2B are very common. 3A and 3B are highly accurate with almost zero tolerance. These also are not common but found in specialty applications (think high tech here like holding two halves of an artificial heart in place).

Steve k has got it exactly right. Every apprentice in my day was encouraged to buy one. It has every detail you need regarding diameter, tpi, drilling size, everything. They can still be bought at most good engineering suppliers. A must for someone in your situation.
