I have an 8-year old boy and here are the things I am thinking about getting him for Christmas:
1) Gameboy Advance SP (they're cheaper than the newer Nintendo DS)
2) Games for Gameboy Advance
3) Playstation 2 games (some are under $20)
4) GI Joe Sigma 6 action figures (or other GI Joes)
5) WWE wresting action figures
6) Bioncles or Lego kits
7) Pirates of the Carribean merchandise
8) Floam (like playdough kind of)
9) Remote-controlled car
10) Robot
11) Skateboard
12) Scooter
Lots to choose from. Hope you can find something in your price range. Good Luck! :)

Lego star wars, any Lego's for that matter.
Paper airplane kits. I've seen them, they make 6 or 10 different type of paper airplanes. If you look on the net you could easily find plans for paper airplanes, print them out full sized, put into a nice box and give to them. (I'd make them myself first so you and help not that an 8 year old would ever admit they need help)
In my son's class they are making paper cranes, and it's funny some of the best one's were made by the boys, and they really got into it. One boy made 6 or 7 of them and had them all over his desk. I think they're going to try jumping frogs next.

Klutz.com is one of my favorite to try for inexpensive, creative, unique gifts for kids. I just got my son The Paper Airplane book. It comes in a book with cool papers and folding directions. It was under $15.

Hot wheels
When I was 8 I use to play with those things all the time.
Make sure to get the tracks that they can connect, so they can build race tracks, and have hours of fun time.
Shouldn't be to expensive

Perhaps an inexpensive digital camera. A great way to capture special times with his friends. He may even get into photography as a hobby. And the advantage to digital cameras... no film to buy and can share photos with friends and relatives via e-mail.

You can buy him art and model kits. They have so many different things for kids to do, from buidling tiny airplanes, growing crystals, and painting foam animals.
Lego's are always an excellent choice!

How about a personalized book? Kids love to read their name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Scooby-Doo, X-Men, Justice League and so many more! Check it out, and good luck...
