My birthday is two days after Christmas, and while it should be a huge celebration, what with Christmas, my birthday and New Years all in one week, it never has been. Also, my mother and I share the same birthday. So basically, Christmas has always been the highlight and the rest always kind of got lost. It bothered me a lot as a kid (I even considered celebrating my birthday on some random day of the year), but as an adult it isn't as bad.
But back to Christmas: Yes, the commercialism has always bothered me. Especially this year, when there were many Christmas displays in stores BEFORE Halloween. To me, that's ridiculous! It also bothers me when people decorate and turn on their Christmas lights before Thanksgiving. Each holiday has it's meaning and I think in the name of commercialism and making money, a lot of people forget the meaning behind them.
I always think about people that I haven't seen in a while and for those who I have lost contact with completely, I spend a lot of time wondering what might have happened to them.
Also, I try to spend some time on what the true meaning of Christmas is and share that with my family and friends. A very large portion of the population celebrates Christmas and for what? This is a Christian religious holiday, so if the birth of Christ has no meaning for them, then all they are doing IS promoting commercialism. That to me is very sad.
But I do love getting together with family and friends and celebrating Christmas for the true meaning! And one of my favorite things that I started as a young adult, is to go around on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and find homeless people that I have seen alot of during the year. Then we give them food and money so that they may feel love that others feel all year round.
This year may be our best and worst one yet. We have a new house that we bought (the house itself isn't new though) and so we have that to be thankful for because last year we were in a desperate situation. However, because we paid cash for it in August, we are still very tight budgetwise and so we can't have a large dinner with a lot of people like we wanted. Also, our son is 17 this year (Bday in July), so this may be the last Christmas that we are able to spend with him for awhile. He wants to move out and see the world (what teenager doesn't?).
So, I guess this will be a somewhat bittersweet time for the next month or so.
Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas to all of you who have a religious interest in the holiday.

I really hate this time of year its all about who can make the most amount of money. The lights and decorations are being put up far too early in towns and cities and in peoples homes it looks utter silly seeing houses plastered in lights can you think of the electricity bills?, every department store are full of people pushing and shoving, others moving at the speed of snails to stop to have a looking at some god awful display screaming children crying babies, at the super market people have their shopping trolleys/carts full to the top with food and drink that couldn't be eaten all in just one or even two days, again more screaming children and crying babies, relatives doing their yearly visits and the television over the holidays is utter shite.is all that fuss really worth it for just one day of the year?
Christmas is not a happy time for alot of people its a down right, miserable, depressing, cold and nasty time. full of false hopes.wishes and expectations that will not come true Santa will not come and deliver all nice presents.for everyone and at this time of year the suicide rates are at a high.
Or if people want to celebrate Christmas here's my theory.
1). Christmas shopping should be done by postal areas as this will shop over crowding of stores and the streets full of traffic, meaning each postal area will be given a time to complete their shopping, if you don't complete your shopping with in that time period then that's tough titty. no other postal area can do their shopping until the area before theirs has finished.
2) You have £20 max per person to buy gifts for,and £100 max to buy food and drink.
3).No sending or buying any Christmas cards, they are a waste of money they either end up thrown out or recycled anyway, and not buying them you will be saving the rain forests
4)Decorations to go up last thing Christmas eve and first thing Boxing day, in town a city centres a week before Christmas, and not a hole entire month before.
5) If you want to celebrate Christmas you have to go to Church, after all whats the point celebrating a Christian festival if your not a Christian?
6).There should be something decent on the telly and not the usual 3 hour long specials of all the soap opera's,or films like Mary Poppins, the great escape, sound of music that have been on zillions of times before.

Christmas is a time to share love with the world. Unfortunately, it has become an expensive rat race. The true meaning of Christmas is still there though. You got to feel it in your heart and teach your children the true reason for the season. I love Christmas. I love the spirit I feel and just being close with my loved ones. I feel renewed and thankful for everything in my life.

I feel like X-mas has become a time of greed and selfishness. I celebrate it because it is a time when I get to spend with family. I HATE the gift giving "requirement". Of course I sold jewelry in the Mall for almost ten years and X-mas time was when people were at their worst. Most were cranky and irritable. Men would bring their wives in to return tennis bracelets because they weren'y big enough, etc. I love X-mas for what it is supposed to be, but what it has become makes me ill.
