Good question. Humans are made to walk, it's one of our most basic and healthy functions. Walking is a great start to a healthy life. One factor in the battle against the bulge is seeing results fast. Unfortunately walking alone is not a serious calorie burner. I do recommend walking for 2 hours a day if you can, remember if you count your day to day activities as walking you can easily reach this goal; this can be assisted with the help of a pedometer. Weight loss isn't just about staying active and eating healthy it's also a lifestyle change. Make sure that everything you do is helping you reach your ultimate goal, including your social life. If you can walk with someone other than yourself you might find yourself more motivated to loose weight and stay healthy. If you can after a month or two work your way up to more activities, that help decrease your risk for heart disease and other problems associated with being over weight. Jogging, running, biking and swimming are all great.
I hope you reach your goal. Stay motivated!

It could work, but it would need to be more than a casual walk. And, be mindful that it will take longer to see results.
If you have the terrain, walk hills or steps as well as flat distances. Come up with a few different walking courses so you don't get bored. Find a local school track that you can walk occasionally. You can also try walking the mall if you have one in your area (this way you'll have a place to walk if the weather turns bad and don't forget to take the stairs).
You might also consider ankle and/or wrist weights as your routine progresses. Adding the weight will make it a little more challenging.
Drink plenty of water and be very mindful of your diet. Don't be tempted by snacks at stores you might see along the way (pack a SMART snack & plenty of water to take on the walk with you - maybe in a small backpack).
Good Luck!

You can try www.sparkpeople.com
It is a healthy way to lose weight.
You type in how much you want to lose and by when etc...and they plan out your meals so you can achieve your goal. They have a calorie counter and everything. Plus they give you a fitness plan according to what type of exercising you like to do. The exercises can be done at home like dumbells, resistance bands & ball. You can also choose from walking, jogging,or a home video. There's many different options. It's like having a nutritionist and it is free. You also have support from the members. A real neat site. I'm quite impressed.
Enjoy!
God Bless!

Walking is a good exercise but to make it worth while you need to walk at a pace faster than you normally would walk. I compine jogging and walking, I walk for 3 minutes and then jog for 10 minutes and then walk again for 3 minutes and then jog again for another 10. I guess you could jog for 3 minutes and walk for 10 minutes.
But yes...walking is a great exercise. Try and walk up hill has much has you can also.
Along with a balanced diet you will lose weight in a healthy and steady way.

I think walking is the best exercise. I was 15lbs over weight but hated join a health club or go on a vigorous dieting so I started walking two miles in the morning and the same distance in the evening. I lost that excess weight without any pains and in a very short time I must add. Good luck.

Two years ago I quit smoking and gained 20 lbs. I went on a power walk 4 times a week 2 miles and watched what I ate. I didn't lose a pound! I don't think it works for everyone but I know that it helps my friend maintain her weight. You could try lifting weights as well as walking.

Yes, you will.
You need to start out slowly. Do some stretching, and then have the first five or ten minutes of your walk be at a gentle pace. Once you have warmed up (and you will feel it, your body temperature will feel warmer, and your muscles will feel slightly loose, and you will feel the blood beginning to move in your veins) you can step up the pace a little bit. But don't overdo it. Walk at a heightened pace for about 20 minutes, and then slow down again. You can stretch again, gently, if you like after you walk.
Eventually, you should start tracking your heart rate, and making sure that it's in the effective cardiovascular workout zone during the fast part of your walk. You can use this chart to figure out what the peak effective heart rate is for you:
http://www.jackis.com/Heart_Rates.htm#WHR%20Chart
Simply take note of your resting heart rate, and then use the chart to determine what your goal heart rate should be during the faster periods of your walk. Try to keep up that pace for at least 20 minutes in the middle of your walk. You may find it helpful to take a watch with a second hand or a stopwatch with you to measure your heart rate. (The easiest method is to count your heart beats for six seconds, then multiply that number by 10.)
Eventually, as you become more fit and start to lose weight, you may wish to walk for longer periods of time. That is fine as long as you don't overdo your exercising. You can work up to 30 minutes of peak rate walking where your heart is in the target zone, with an appropriate warm up and cool down at each end of that 30 minute period.
Walking is one of the best exercises out there. Nearly everyone can do it, and it's gentle on your body. If you walk faithfully and watch what you eat, you will lose weight. And you might be surprised. Eventually will probably come sooner than you think. I am not talking about losing 10 pounds in two weeks, but with regular exercise, and paying attention to getting to your goal heart rate, you will probably soon start to see yourself losing 1 to 2 pounds per week, which is a really safe, good rate of loss. Keep walking, and keep being careful about what you eat, and you can lose a lot of weight that way.
Good luck!
P.S. If you find that you need motivation, I highly recommend getting a dog. Even if you don't feel like walking, the dog will, and sometimes when you really don't want to go out, that cute little dog will help motivate you. Trust me, I know that for a fact :)

Large size people will be able to lose weight while walking. However, if you are of normal size, walking will help your heart more than anything. To make it more aerobic, increase your speed and time over time. However, any exercise is a good exercise. Plus walking may put you in the direction to jog next.

Walking at a good brisk pace will certainly help you lose calorie gain, gain muscle tone, increase your respiratory function and general overall muscle tone without impact on your joints, and if you are moderating your calorie intake and eating a good balanced diet, you should see a slow and steady loss of weight.
Walking and swimming are the best low impact toning excercises there are. Increasing the output and decreasing the input with a good diet are the answer to health improvement and healthy weight loss.

It will help. The key to losing weight is burning more calories than you consume. Your walking will help you burn more, and controlling what you eat will help consume less calories. Thus, I say it is the right more.
If I am in your shoes, I am walking or doing any other activity I enjoy (biking, shopping, dancing, etc.) and keeping my cals to 2000/day. No more, no less.
This works for me, my bodyfat is about 6% and I look good.
This should get you started.
