Cold sore take about 2 weeks to heal. Try not to have thinks high in acid (Orange juice, tomato's, etc) that will only agitate the wound even more. Do not use peroxide this will open the wound more and cause chapping of the lips. If the cold sore is on the lip use carmex only $1.50 at Walgreen's. If the cold sore is located in the inside of the mouth use an oral wash not Listerine. Colgate has a good product that will not burn. Use it as needed and wait it out.

Get well soon

Cold sores are due to a latent recurrent infection by the herpes simplex virus(type I). The virus hides in a side such as the neurones and nerve body, where the immune system cannot detect it. So it cannot be eradicated completely and once in a while when your immune system weakens (due to stress, medicines...) the virus becomes active, travels down the nerve ganglions and causes signs and symptoms such as cold sores (also called herpes labialis) gingivostomatitis(gun and mouth ulceration) and so on.

Topical acyclovir can limit the term of infection but it does not prevent reinfection. Currently, there is no vaccination approved against this virus.

Try using Aciclovir (Zovirax) cream on it just as it starts to tingle ie. before the blisters first appear. If you are getting frequent and troublesome cold sores, oral Aciclovir either as treatment at the time of cold sore appearing, or as maintenance (ongoing) dose - of course with the guidance of your doc, may be called for.
