He wanted to put his stuff in your trunk, but maybe he thought your trunk was too small for all the stuff he had. Maybe it was way too big and would just be an inconvenience for it to bounce around everywhere. Maybe he just decided not to bother you and that he could put his stuff in his own trunk.
