You wrote "...you could just as easily say, light doesn't exist, it's just the absence of darkness. True goodness doesn't exist, it's just the absence of evil." This would make sense only if you believe acquired intelligence (learning something) doesn't exist because it's just the absence of ignorance (not knowing it). But if you have learned something, you've progressed; you don't go back to un-learning it. Your statements leave out the progressive element of one thing replacing another thing.
Speaking of ignorance, for those who don't know that the biblical "God" claims credit for creating "evil": Isaiah 45:7 I make peace and create evil. I the Lord do all these things.

Yes, evil exists, but not as part of original creation. The source of all evil is man, not God. We tend 2 view evil simply as the absence of good. So anything less than good, we could call evil. There is nothing greater than God, and no amount of evil couls exist to challenge Him. Man introduced evil in 2 the world. It occurs when the freewill choice is amde to not do the right thing. Make a staement against evil, be loving and generous to other people.

there is often been a controversy between theists no remember if evil is a separate tension or purely the absence of stable. many faiths have a 'manichaean' view of two 'gods', one stable and one evil, who conflict over the earth. some Christians see it this form, with God and the devil locked in try against, the earth dazzling interior the soundness. seem at how significant the devil is to a pair varieties of Christianity! If evil became into purely the absence of stable, he would not be significant in any respect. non secular doctrines and scriptures are often centred on explaining why, if God is acceptable and all his creations are suitable, why existence on earth is so imperfect. one thank you to describe it fairly is to work out that there is a devil who has an evil impression interior the worldwide, offering evil alternatives purely as God grants stable ones, and guy has 'unfastened will' to flow the two way. CS Lewis had an thrilling way of watching it (and that i choose i ought to tell you which of them e book yet they have all style of melted mutually in my innovations considering I examine them years in the past). He suggested there have been fairly 2 varieties of evil practiced with the aid of people. One is -authentic- evil--greed, anger, and so on., the element that makes people choose to actively harm one yet another. the different is purely our 'animal nature'--laziness, selfishness, the unawareness of the purposes of others.

You have it all confused! God did not create evil. Let me tell you the real story:
Back way a looooooong time ago, before the earth was created, God had created the heavens and angels. There was one angel who was soo beautiful! The most beautiful of them all. His name was Lucifer.
Well, Lucifer was very proud. He decided that He wanted to be God. He didn't want to be just an angel, he wanted to be God. So God got mad, because He is the alpha and omega, really big important guy. God kicked Lucifer out of heaven down to the earth here.
Lucifer didn't go alone, either. He took some other angels that wanted to support him in his quest to become more powerful than God.
So in the end God created something that turned into evil.
I know you're not stupid. Lucifer is Satan and those friends of his are his demons. I know it may sound far-fetched but thats the true story.
You can read about it in Isaiah. (I don't know exactly where. I'll tell you if I found out.)

In Isaiah 45:7 it says:
7 I form the light and create darkness,
I make peace and create calamity;
I the Lord do all these things.
The word of calamity is ra'rah which is interpreted in some translations as evil.
I think the scriptures fully support that God does create calamity.
I think that is a good definition of the flood, calamity.
Evil as we understand it began with Lucifer who was cast down to the earth because of his vanity.
He appeared to Eve as the deceiver, which is the reason he is called Satan which means the deceiver.
Abigail's answer was right on.

God created humans with free choice. It is in human nature to sin. God created the world without sin, but because it was human nature to sin, and Adam and Eve sinned, the world has become evil. Not all evil, but it has turned into most people being very self-centered and fending only for themselves and fighting each other for glory and gold. You can see evidence of this even early on in the Bible, with stories such as Noah's Ark where God decided to flood the world because it had too much evil in it. Or where at the Tower of Babel where God made the people to speak different languages because they wanted too much power for themselves. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this as clearly as I would like, I apologize.

god did not create evil because evil isn't a thing, it's a negative behavior. now if you say god makes us behave the ways in which we do, then you could say he or she created evil, but you cannot create something that has no matter, no physical substance.
