Going to a Christmas party tonight at a Senior VP's house. Did not have time to get a host gift, do not have too much money, and as you can guess they probably have all the money in the world. What can I get that isn't too expensive, but doesn't scream "I'm cheap??" Don't have much time, just my lunch break to pick something up.

Some ideas:
A bottle of wine -- you will need to spend at least $20-25 on this to make it a good option (make sure you put it in a cute wine bag)
Some flowers
A small (cute) box of chocolates
A small plant

Good luck!

You'd be suprised about the SVP i bet. He's probably just a normal person like yourself. Sometimes in these situations I like to take, as many people have suggested, a bottle of wine. But make sure when you give it to the host you tell him you've been wanting to try it for a while and that it got 90 something points on wine spectator and you've read good reviews about it, and add "so could you let me know when you open it". That way, even if he doesn't open it during the party, obviously the best scenario because you get to recoup some of your loss, he will think of you and think, I must tell so and so that was a nice drop.

It won't hurt your career that's for sure. Get a nice bottle but no more than $20, there are plenty around the low teens that score well on wine spectator.

I don't believe that something has to be expensive to be a nice present. A holiday candle or soap attractively wrapped...I brought a nice Christmas tea and a small box of shortbread and wrapped in an attractive way for a business party. It looked beautiful and usually they don't open the gifts when you are there so if it looks good on the outside...you are good to go. Another idea is some mulling spices and a tea ball. These gifts have some finesse even if they are not expensive!

You could bring a very nice bottle of red wine. Don't go to the grocery store- if there is a wine store in your area check it out. Tell the owner/clerk what you need. Tell him/her how much you want to spend. You can get some very nice wines from $12-$20 depending on the wine. (more for Pinot Noir).

There are also "accessories" for wine glass- called bracelets. The are placed on the end of the stem of the wine glass. This "marks" your glass. So, if you leave it for any reason, you can find your glass by the "bracelet" it's wearing. They are not very expensive and usually comes in sets of 6.
