a lot of people confuse thirst for hunger at times like that.
Try a mug of hot tea. A full mug will probably prevent you from eating more at the family meal anyways - Water will be good too. Steer clear from fruit juices or anything heavier in calories. You might as well have a slice of cake if you want a smoothie!

If you are starting to get really hungry at 5:30, it is better to have a small snack to avoid over eatting at dinner. First I'd suggest drinking a glass of water. Your body cannot distiguish the early signs of thirst from hunger so you may actually be thirsty! If you must eat choose something small but filling enough to keep you satisfied for the hour. Stay away from simple carbs like white bread and snacks that are very sugary or high in fat. Try a bowl of oatmeal, a half of a turkey sandwhich on whole wheat bread, or a bowl of brown rice.

Also try eatting 4 of 5 smaller meals during the day rather than 3 larger meals. This will keep your blood sugar up and keep your metabolism going as well as keep you satisfied between meals. When your blood sugar drops, that's when you start craving snack foods.

once you feel hungrey your metabolism slows to save the body from starving. Eat something small and healthy to tide you over. going hungry can do permanent damage to your metabolism

Have a cup of tea, veggie plate, or get busy doing something until dinner time. Nothing wrong with showing some self control and being in control over your body and not allowing your body to be in control of you.
