The container has a date of 3 weeks ago on the bottom. It has never been opened. Is it safe to eat?

If it lunges at you with a sharpened carrot stick when you open the fridge - it has definitely gone bad!

Personally, I always follow one of the first rules of food service - "When in doubt, throw it out". Cottage cheese isn't expensive, and it's not worth getting sick over. Just toss it.

There are 2 types of dates best before and use by.
Something like cottage cheese has a use by date do not serve this to anyone after this date but if its for yourself your nose will tell you better than anyone can.
I have eaten sweets way past the best before date and they have been just ok

Open it and smell it. If it has been at the back of the refigerator where it is coldest it should be fine. Try opening and eating just a small spoonful and putting it back. If you don't get sick in the next 3 hours then eat the rest of it withing 3 days!

Check the date! It should be good for 7 days past the expiration date if unopened.

I wouldn't call it unsafe...i.e. you probably wont die, but a nice case of food poisening will most likely head your way. And if that doesn't happen, you'll probably vomit from the smell, sight, and taste of it. Just go out and buy some new Cottage cheese and save yourself the pain

I wouldn't. I'd say it's safe to eat for 7 days after the expiration date, max.

Ick! No! Unopened, I wouldn't go more than 2 days past the expiration date. Toss it.

First try the shake test. If you shake it and you feel something bumping around inside it means it has seperated and probbaly not good.

Or you could go out and spend $2 on another and walk there for exercise.

Open it, check it out. It depends on how cold the fridge is and what you want to do with it.
