Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, so the link below is a picture of an elliptical trammel. The rod with the pen at the end is constrained by dowels sliding in perpendicular slots. When moved, the pen marks out an ellipse. Adjusting location of the dowels on the rod will produce different ellipses.
