My son is having his first "friend" birthday party next weekend. I would love to know why I have to give out goody bags to all the children who are coming to the party when I just spent a ton of money on the party itself.

I wouldn't feel obligated to give goody bags. I am big on not feeling obligated to do anything - I only do the things I want to do. While a goody bag has become a status symbol, most kids don't need or want what is in them. As another parent, I beg you - please don't send home a bunch of candy with my kid. I don't give my kids snacks like that at home. I lighten up while they are at the party and let them eat cake, ice cream, etc but I don't want it at home.

Actually, goody bags are a nice gesture, but most of the "junk" in them goes to waste. This year for my daughter's birthday, I did something different. I took several posed group shots of all of the kids there. Then, after the party, I hit the local Walmart and chose the best one from my disk. I then created a photo greeting card but put something to the effect of "Thanks for making my 5th Birthday a Splash!" The splash part was because it was a water-themed party, but you could change to suit you. Mail or hand deliver to all of those who joined you as a nice reminder of what a super time you all had!!

How old is your son? That all depends on what to give out to the kids but you can always hit your local dollar store- they have some really cool gifts there these days for toddlers- that's where a lot of my friends go for stocking stuffers these days, they have coloring books (with popular characters on them too...not cheap stuff) puzzles, toys, and a lot more. Try buying one (or two if there wont be too many kids) items per child and wrap them like they are gifts fot the kids to open as well as the birthday child.

You don't have to. It is just traditional to give out party favors. If you have spent a lot on the party, then I wouldn't worry about favors. Personally, I get kind of tired of my kids bringing home little bags of candy or junk.

Like others have said above... you don't have to. I think it is crazy that this whole gift bag thing even started! I think it is all about trying to outdo the what the parent of another child did at their party. Just do what you want. Kids don't care. And if the parents care... to heck with them!

You don't. Kids don't need more crap. I'm sure they have enough already. The parents will thank you for not sending them home will a bag of junk they will have to pry from their kids' hands to throw away.

You don't.

Cake and ice cream is enough of a treat.
