The Bible talks about joy as one of the fruits of the spirit, what is your definition of joy?

I think it is more than just being happy, but a complete sense of peace and happiness that comes from a choice to be content and at peace.

What is your definition of joy?

The word that came to mind for me is 'elation'. I think one has to make a determined decision to be joyful and happy in this world or it just won't work. As the scripture says, 'As a man thinketh, so is he.'

Here is a definition from the net, I was curious too.

v.intr.
To take great pleasure; rejoice.
v.tr. Archaic
1. To fill with ecstatic happiness, pleasure, or satisfaction.
2. To enjoy.

I don't get the whole rights v privilege argument. Is being cared for when ill a privilege reserved only for the wealthy? I know its not a right enumerated in the Constitution, but it certainly is a human right. One that every other industrialized country has managed to give its citizens. We sound like some primitive feudal country when we talk about health care as a function only for the privileged. Don't we care as much about our citizens as the governments of England, Canada, France care about others? Are we really happy with having great doctors, hospitals and treatments only for those with money to buy insurance or money to pay out of pocket? Are we really happy that we rank so badly in access to care compared to the rest of the first world, and sometimes second world countries? Its a real, honest shame that we can't find a way to make sure our people aren't cared for when ill. While we have emergency care, which you will be billed for, and Medicaid for the poor and homeless, this isn't an argument about poverty, they are taken care of, its a problem for the middle class, who stand to lose everything they work for if they become ill at the wrong time or their place of business drops group health care coverage as so many have done. I recently had a health problem, if it had turned out badly I would have had to remortgage my home. Why should that be necessary, and before you say I should have insurance, you should know it would run twelve thousand a year for us over the age of sixty, but under sixty five. We had to buy some second rate 'assurance' that I don't trust a bit. Ask yourself, could you afford that? Or is the choice just to put off seeing the doctor? Taking the tests? It could be you or your mother one day. Think carefully before you jump into the idea that its easy.

For examples: when your baby says for the first time, da-da or I love you, finally finishing a project that has taken so long and is done. As to joy itself, a feeling of contentment . You feel whole and that everything is where it should be and you don';t want that moment to change.

I believe that joy is the active pursuit of happiness. Not pleasure, but happiness. Happiness is being healthy physically and mentally. To grow is healthy.

Joy is the active pursuit of growth.
