What about a slave?

Exodus 21
20 “If a man beats his male or female slave with a club and the slave dies as a result, the owner must be punished. 21 But if the slave recovers within a day or two, then the owner shall not be punished, since the slave is his property.

Spanky, that's the most retarded argument I've ever heard. Animals have a different lifestyle from ours in nature and we can't hold them to the same standards we have for ourselves - and we *should* have higher standards set for ourselves in regards to the treatment of animals, because we are the more conscious beings. You keep talking about responsiblity, but treating animals badly is irresponsible and a gross misuse of our power and indicates we have a lot of psychological dysfunction on a mass scale in our planet that needs to be corrected. Hell, a lot of our population happens to be high-functioning sociopaths or narcissists. - they tend to have no empathy for other people or forms of life.

It's about respect for life in general. People who do not respect the lives of animals and beat them, tend not to respect people either. It's all related and reflects on the individuals psychological makeup. Many socipathic murderers first started by torturing and killing animals - this has been documented *over and over and over*.

Just because animals aren't the same species as us doesn't give us the right to abuse them. All life is precious. When you use the argument "they are just animals" it is a similar attitude people take in regards to other races when they want to justify their violent actions towards them also.

If you find yourself beating a dog or carrying out violent acts against any living thing you are already suffering and your self inflicted punishment will continue until you have grown into a different awareness in which you are able to forgive both yourself and the world.

No, the bible tells us animals were placed on earth for man's enjoyment. Jesus doesn't mind if we beat them. He never said anything against the beating of animals or slaves either. The only important thing is that we believe Jesus. Nothing else matters.

It's morally wrong, but I don't think it should get you into legal trouble.

When we start giving animals the same rights as people, our society is doomed. Will animals then have to live by the same laws as people? Will we arrest dogs for urinating in public? Can we arrest a cat for murdering a mouse?

You can't have it both ways. With rights comes responsibilities. If you want animals to have the same rights as people, then they must obey the same laws.
