As soon as your child shows interest in the toilet. My daughter show interest one day when she was only 13 months. I decided to put her on the toilet and she only smiled at me. I then bought a potty seat for her. She played with it more than anything.
If your child starts using the potty do not get discourage if they loose interest. It takes time and they have to be ready.
Good luck.

A good age is when the child shows interest. If there isn't any interest, talk about it at 2 years of age and if still no interest, at 24 months and 30 months. See if the child is interested in buying a seat that fits over the regular toilet seat or a potty chair. I like the seats better, no clean up. If no interest, slightly push the subject at 36 or 38 months. Take child to buy underwear, but don't make a big deal about it or they will see the power they have and they do! Try to be very positive and casual about it and positively reinforce good behavior or going on the potty! Good luck. When they're ready it won't take long, a couple of days to a week in my experience. If they're not ready, months.

My son was okay at a year and a half old to start but that does not mean you need start that soon. It will depend on when your kid is ready. I would suggest you get some pull ups and also a potty chair for the little one. Do not make them fight with the toilet as it is too big for them and you do not want any fears developing.
I do have to say my son caught on really fast and it is due to this. I made sure he never had a wet diaper on. The second he wet I changed him. When it came time to potty training he did not like the wet feeling and would come to me to help him out of his dilemma. Each time I would lead him to the toilet and tell him what a good job he was doing. He was trained in 4 days. This is not always the case so just remember patience and do not spank him if he makes a mistake.
See this site as it offers good tips:

I started my son when he was about 18 months, he did great. I guess I was lucky. By the time he was 2, he was fully potty trained. There is a movie called big bear in the blue house that teaches kids how to go to the potty. I always put potty training panties on him, not pull ups, becuase they are just like diaper and he would use the bathroom in them. Good Luck!!

Most children begin potty training sometime around 18 months to three years of age. Even in an older child, it is important to look for signs of readiness before you begin potty training, including:
staying dry for at least 2 hours at a time
having regular bowel movements
being able to follow simple instructions
being uncomfortable with dirty diapers and wanting them to be changed
asking to use the potty chair
asking to wear regular underwear.

introduce the child to the potty early on, around the time the start walking....
actually start training the child between 1 1/2 - 2 years old. My daughter was a little slow, but you just have to be patient with them. I would start out with a training pot, then gradually shift to the training seat. It works great for toddlers.

Honestly, I feel that between 1 year and 18 months is best, unless you don't mind having your baby in diapers for 2-4 years, which is what I often see.
A baby is NOT too young to start potty train between 12-18 months.
Save yourself money on diapers and the pain of continued diaper changes by starting potty training early!!!
Good luck to you!

When should you start toilet training your child?
Do not start toilet training until both you and your child are ready. You are ready when you are able to devote the time and energy necessary to encourage your child on a daily basis for at least 3 months.
Your child is ready when he or she can signal that the diaper is wet or soiled, or when your child is able to say that he or she would like to go to the potty. This usually occurs when a child is 18 to 24 months of age. However, it is not uncommon for a child to still be in diapers at 2 and a half to 3 years of age.

The bottom line is that they will let you know when they are ready. Put the potty seat in the bathroom now so it will simply become a part of how the world is in their mind. Let them see you using the toilet so they will make the connection that that is how big folks go. Ask/encourage them (but don't push) any time they look like they might be interested in giving it a try. When this happens will very widely from child to child.
