You can get an inexpensive set up made of food grade plastic. Glass is also good. Wood will impart flavors into the beer, not normally desired and is easily contaminated with wild yeasts that will taint your results.

Metals can impart flavors due to acids in the wort, but are very heavy duty. Stainless steel is inert enough to use. Aluminum is subject to pitting and therefore can be hard to sanitize.

first off, welcome to the most excellent pastime and hobby, homebrewing!
i could go on and on about what works well for me, but theres an excellent book out there that has as much or as little information or as youll ever want to brew excellent beer. the name of the book is called "how to brew" by john palmer. with this and listening to the guys at the brew supply shop and their recommendations, you will brew great beer that your friends and neighbors will really like. have fun!
and dont forget to try making some hard cider sometime, if you like that type of drink. its easy to make and get a high alcohol yield from.
