Any of these?
1. The other two birds were going to destinations further than
the center bird (2 birds are going ahead of me) and there
was another two birds yet to start their flight (and 2 at the
back)
2. The birds in front and at the back were pregnant.
3. The center bird was squint-eyed (had double vision).

The centre bird counts himself with the front bird and says 2 birds ahead of me , Then he counts himself and the back bird and says 2 birds @ the back of me ,

Ummm... maybe the second bird didn't see the 2 birds behind of it and ahead.After sometime it saw the birds!! Simple!
