I just got my contacts yesterday and managed to put them in and take them out at the doctor's office. However last night was a trail by fire. It took me over an HOUR to get them out, I wanted someone to just kill me. When I finally got them off, my eyes were practically bleeding and gooey.
You contact wearers out there, is there some reassurance that in time removing contacts will become easier with practice?

Also, any tips for getting them off? For some reason I have a VERY strong blink reflex if I accidentally touch my upper eyelashes. (which puts the lense right back and place and restarts the ordeal of removal)!!

I tried them years ago and I hated them. if you are having trouble go back to the eye doctor and they will help you.

Do you have the soft (disposable) or the hard (gas permeable) lenses?

I've only ever worn hard so can only help you out there. ;-)

Getting fitted with them was a nightmare, yes, I know exactly how your eyes feel. And the bad news is with hard lenses, they feel like that for the first week, until the inside of your eyelid develops a miniscule callus, and then you're good to go.

The good news is that removing them gets MUCH easier with practice and it helps if you keep your eyes very well moisturized with refreshing drops during the day. If your eyeballs are dry, the contacts DO NOT want to come off during removal. They just like to pop out while you're driving down the road or sneezing.

As to removing the small hard lenses: with eye open and looking forward (do this in a mirror), put your index fingers on your upper and lower eyelids.
Now think of tiddly-winks... just pop it out --push index fingers still on eyelids together and the contact will break suction and pop off-- and catch it in your hand. This is NOT the recommended method, but then again I never was able to master the "just blink and pull your eyelid and it'll pop right out" method!
*LOL*!

(Also... it's very important to do this over a sink with LIGHTS ON and DRAIN CLOSED!)

Hope this helps. ;-)

Say...you came to the right place. I had a great teacher and this is my routine; I take my thumb and pointer fingers to open my lids wide, with a magnified mirror I insert the contact from the top under the lid then blink, it will go into place. Always wash your hands and clean the contact before inserting I use Opti Free Replenish for lubrication and cleaning. Again, from top of eye ball. NOW to remove; same routine but grab contact from the BOTTOM, pinch and grab. Also I found that it was impossible when I was nervous so relax. You will catch on and don't you give up, contacts are the greatest thing since Chocolate.

You need to call your eye doc and go back to him today for more practice on removing your lenses. If you had that much trouble taking them out last night you should have asked someone for help. Go back and get more instruction on how to remove them at the place were you got your contact lenses.

I used to have contacts for 10 years (Thank God for Lasik now!!), but the best ways I'd found where to either pinch the contact sideways (takes some getting used to), or starting out you may try to open you eye VERY wide, then pull the corner back with your finger (Like making chinese eyes) then just blink. If they're moist enough and you take them out to clean regularly like you should, they'll pop right out.

I had the same problem when I first got mine and believe me, it gets so much easier! The best method when I first got them was to take my finger and push the contact to the inside corner of my eye until it came out, however, now I prefer to take my thumb and forefinger and gently pinch the lense itself so it folds and releases from your eye. That is generally the most effective way, it's kinda hard to describe, sorry. Hope that this is helpful and don't fret.

While it's possible you might be one of those people who will never get used to contact lenses, most of us can and I certainly hope you do.

Here are a couple of online resources that might help. One is a tutorial on inserting and removing contact lenses. The other is a Contact Lens FAQ.

Hope they help.
