Lets' look at the history: Islam and Muslims fights by the sword to spread Allah's word. It started with Mohamed and it continues over the centuries and it is expressed today in constant Jihad and terror.
So it doesn't matter what the pope says; the history tells us it is true

.... The propaganda against Islam has been so strong that it made a false impact on the minds of brainwashed people. But the evidences scattered in the annals of history have another story to tell you.. " It is altogether a misconception that the Arabian progress was due to the 'sword' alone.THE SWORD MAY CHANGE AN ACKNOWLEDGED NATIONAL CREED, BUT IT CAN NOT EFFECT THE CONSCIENCES OF MEN."-- [The Historic Role of Islam, by M.N.Roy,pg-49,Vora & Co.8 Round Building, Bombay-2] ".........I became more than ever convinced that it was NOT THE SWORD that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. IT WAS THE RIGID SIMPLICITY, the utter self-affacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his interpidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. THESE AND NOT THE SWORD carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. -- [Mahatma Gandhi in his article published in 'YOUNG INDIA' in 1924] " No amount of coercion could possibly force a whole nation to abandon its traditional faith with so little resistance and accept that of the conqueror with such surprising alacrity as did the Persians over the vast territory from the Tigris to the Oxus. The ancient faith was decayed. It no longer satisfied the spiritual requirement of a cultured people."--[The Historic Role of Islam, by M.N.Roy,pg-47,Vora & Co.8 Round Building, Bombay-2] " Of all the great religions of the world, Islam embraced- prior to the expansion of christian missionary activity in the 10th century- the widest variety of races. Originally amongst Arabs and other semitic peoples, it spread amongst Iranians, Caucasians, Mediterranean, whites, slaves, Turks and Tatars, Chinese, Indians, Indonesians,Bantus and west African Negroes." --[ Mohammadanism, An Historical Survey, by HAMILTON A.R.GIBB, pg-25 ] If Islam was spread by sword then why despite having absolute fanatic power [as they are popularly attributed with] and having a whale of a time of 1000 years, could not convert the majoirty of India to Islam and why Muslims remained a minority through the centuries while Hiltler changed the face of the world only in few years ? The fact is that the misconceptions about Islam have been spread like a mission though a rational examination of the facts can unveil the lies easily. ...

Well I´m neither Muslim nor Christian, but when I see the unproportional violent reactions sometime in the Muslim World as soon as someone do or say something against Islam is easy to believe that Islam is a "violent " religion.
No other religion that I have encountered, or even heard of, will behead, cut peoples hand off, burn other countries flag, stone and burn other countries embassies, blow up innocent touristing foreigner, kidnap foreigner or blow themselves up in "martyredome" and so on... in the name of their religion.
Other religions has, in the medeival times, done some of that - sure - but when one sees the exaggerations of "modern" Islam one cannot help to feel that Islam alltogether is the most "violent" of them all...

if you call the ideology of jihad and shariah violence then yes.
if someone is over a long period made to feel a second class citizen, and ends up converting...that is psychological coersion.
i think islam is formulated in such a way that its members areencouraged to want to spread the faith.
but shariah is an abomination...
no one religion should interfere with the law, let alone dictate what the law should be.

Well, since Benedict was only quoting an ancient source, I truly don't think that we can lay the idea at his feet, per se.
Was he "right" in repeating what was said? Of course! The Pope was addressing a group of academics. The quote was no surprise.
The surprise was that the Islamists took the speech out of context (an academic conference) and blew it all up.
Pun intended.

Blaming religion for everything is very simple-minded of us. Human nature
is to take what it wants, and kill in anger. Therefor we need to have Law and
Order, and that must be "Enforced"!
