First things first.... find a dentist that you are comfortable with. You have a relationship with your healthcare givers, and you need to trust them. You should ask people you know who their dentist is and why they like them. Next, you need to get on a regular recare schedule... going in for prophys, exams, xrays. If you can have a few appointments like that where you don't have to have any restorative work, it will help you to become more comfortable and trusting. You must remember, they are not trying to hurt you and want your dental experiences to be pleasant ones. When something is diagnosed, have it done as soon as possible, having treatment done while it is small is a lot easier on you. It goes much more quickly and painlessly...and costs less. Keep in mind, teeth do not heal themselves, they never will.

I am terrified of the dentist! But I also work for him! Our office offers sedation dentistry. So before I have any work done I take a pill to relax me, then when we get me in the chair we hook me up to Nitrous Oxide. I had my wisdoms extracted last year and was ok for the whole surgery. The pills make you kinda loopy so you will need a driver to and from the office. My suggestion to you is look through your phonebook for a Dr in your area who advertises "Conscious Sedation." If you can't find someone who says that, try calling around. Tell the receptionist your fears and see what they can offer you.
I PANIC when I am in the patient chair (it is pretty extreme) so don't feel bad. Nitrous Oxide is not enough for me, so don't be afraid to ask questions, if all they can offer you is Nitrous maybe you should look around a little more. Good Luck...

Me too. What I did was find a new dentist who would do sedation dentistry. You get pills when you get there, and I don't remember much of anything and I had major work done. The down side is that you will have to have someone drive you home, and the rest of the day is pretty well shot sleeping, but that's fine with me. Good luck. I found mine on the Internet.

Just go to a different dentist if you don't like him . I don't mind going into the dentist but as long it is not a man . And ask your dentist can you take brakes . And just tell him or her the way you feel . The know what the way people feel . I hope this helps you . It helped me .

Hey I am 50 years old....and have the same problem!!!
I finally found a dentist that doesn't hurt me!!! Honestly, I take a couple ibuprofen before I go, they have the TV on for me, I have told them I am terrified and they told me to raise my left hand (the hand farthest from the dentist) if I am anxious.
You can do this....I did.....
And you know...it is really easy for me to type just relax....but when you first get in the chair...breathe in and out through your nose and concentrate on doing that the entire time you are there.
May the force be with you

Just relax in the chair and close your eyes and dont even think what the dentist is doing . Have your mind on something positive and relaxing like a beach scenery.

Me too.. I feel the same way. I figure if I go and get it over with..I won't have to go anymore. Besides..now a days..they can knock you out and bring you back without being woozzy.

Well why are u afraid of them?
Just take deep breaths in and out!
I do that whenever i feel fear or pain. It helps and soothes the problem.
