those are about the worst possible travel times one could possibly pick. while most people will be going the opposite way for most of the trip, you will be fighting the weekend rushes between NY and NJ. I recommend starting out at least an hour earlier on both days.

Take I-95 to I-287 (NOT at New Rochelle,NY -- in New Jersey, near Perth Amboy). Take I-87 a couple exits west, and you're at Edison.

You can also take the train. Amtrak to Penn Station (Metro-North brings you to GCT, not Penn), and NJTransit brings you right to Edison.

no doubt you have picked the worst possible times to travel
Try this route while it does add about 35 miles onto the trip I think that you can more than make up for that in the time you won't be stuck in traffic.
I-84 W to I-684/ White Plains
I-684 to the end Take I-287 to the Tappan Zee Bridge over the bridge onto the NYS thruway - I-87 N- and then take another road numbered I-287 [ which you will pick up at Suffern NY ]all the way around the NJ countryside and back to Edison/Perth Amboy
for mapquest purposes use
hartford to suffern ny
suffern to middletown NJ
and middletown to edison NJ
have fun
