have a look on the national archives online search, or if he was in the Navy at sea try the war office, you will need his full name, date of birth and approx date of death.
They are very good and free most of the time

Ancestry.co.uk have a naval section but you have to be a member to access it, If you would like to post his name and a possible county of residence I would be glad to search for you.

type in- 'port maritime information gateway'. its an excellent website which covers everything regarding records going back to the C18. another one that is general - 'ancestory.co.uk'.
