I'm pretty sure I need to install Windows, but I'm not sure...what happens if I don't have the windows disc? Will the computer be non-operational?

I'm selling the computer, so I want it to be 'new' for the buyer.

you cannot repair or re-install windows without the windows cd...and if it is xp it will have to be a copy of windows you own as there is an activation code that makes each disk work on only one computer at a time....but when you put the windows disk in to repair or reinstall it will walk you through reformatting and may even do it all for you...just make sure you burn to disk anyrhing you want to keep as reformatting just means wiping your hard drive

formatting your hard drive is a little extreem. first off who told you to reformat? formatting erases everything on your computer hard drive you would be starting from scratch and formatting is used mostly to set up a brand new computer. You will have to install Windows and all your programs also all your files will be gone.
Yes your computer will not operate after you format your computer. You will be able to use dos on your computer and that is it.

hope this helps

I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
