The only difference that is prominent is their coat. German rotts have a slighty curly coat, and American rotts have the sleek, straight coat. Other subtle differences are their builds. American rotts are usually bigger, slightly taller, and leaner, whereas German rotts are shorter, stouter, and thicker. The build of course varies according to the parents' size.

German dogs are bred for working ability. American dogs are bred for looks. German dogs tend to be healthier with better bone structure. American dogs have a strong tendancy to have unstable temperaments and hip/elbow displaysia.

German Rotts have much stronger prey drives due to their working ethics, but they also have a much more stable temperament than the typical American bred dog. Rottweilers are a very strong dog, and in the wrong hands or with a submissive owner can hurt people. They are NOT for the average dog owner.

German ones are more gung-ho temperment wise, better suited for an owner that is going to work the dog in Schutzhund or as a Police dog. Not for the inexperienced owner!

American ones are more laid-back & more suitable as a family pet.

i believe the german rottie is more stockier and muscle than the american ones. if you will go and look up info on the german and american ones you will see the difference.
I believe you will also pay more money for the german ones. they are bred for their size and for shows.
