my husband and i sometimes eat at the coffee table.....one day i took off my socks (i had only worn them in the house) and set them on the table.....my husband freaked out and said it was disgusting, etc.....personally i couldn't see why he was freaked out by my socks, when i see his cats on that table licking their buttholes all the time........i'm wondering which is worse.....socks on the table or a cat licking it's butthole on the table?????? (and yes i know they are BOTH gross....i'm wondering which would bother you more....)

Cats on the table. They are in the litter box constantly doing their business. I'm pretty sure you are walking in the toilet with your socks! Tell your hubby to take some Midol and relax...it's only a coffee table!

If I ate on the coffee table, I wouldn't let the cat up on it. However, a cat licking itself is natural. It's how cats clean themselves. They don't just lick their buttholes, they lick themselves all over. How can you be grossed out by a cat's natural process? An equivalent to that, I think, would be your husband clipping his fingernails and letting the shavings fall on the coffee table. Although you probably wouldn't like it, would it gross you out? It wouldn't gross me out but it might put me off a bit. As far as you taking off your socks and putting them on the table, I wouldn't be grossed out but I think I'd be more bothered by that than by the cat being on the table. You could've put your socks on the floor or you could've put them beside you on the couch. There are a number of options you could've chosen rather than putting them on the table. Even if you were in the house all day and did nothing to work up a sweat, would you put your underwear on the same table you eat?

If you only SOMETIMES eat at the coffee table, and if you clean the table well before eating there, then I don't see why either would draw more attention than the other. But both are pretty gross for a place where you always eat and might not always think to clean immediately before eating there.

aside from the other events that may occur on the table you have to look at the situation in isolation.

Putting your footwear on the table is not appropriate but there are many things worse than that. I think I would ask that the socks did not mingle with my coffee

cats do that where ever & when ever ... its a form of their nature ... but to put your socks on the table is gross because you know better ... I'm with your husband ... that's gross ... but then I'd push the cat off the table and force them to do that elsewhere.

Hm...
The cat, I guess.
Although when I had a cat, it would sit on the table and counters all the time, when we weren't looking.
But you know that these things don't always make sense, right?

Both are pretty gross, but if I had to pick one it would be the socks.
