Can anyone reccomend a decent magnification and/or brand that I should look for when purchasing binoculars? I want something inexpensive and compact that I can take to football games to see the players from the crappy seats that I am able to afford (ha ha ha) :-)

It really depends upon your budget and what you consider to be “inexpensive”. High end bino’s can cost you $2500 , and mid range bino’s will run you at least $500. If you don’t really want to give your first born for a pair of binoculars you can still get a pair that is fogproof and waterproof, but you won’t be able to see as well in low light conditions. I am into outdoor archery and have found it difficult to spend less than $200 and still maintain decent quality glass. My recommendation would be the VORTEX Sidewinder, but that still may be too expensive (probably about 175 new on ebay). If it is still too expensive, look for binoculars that are both fogproof and waterproof. If you are using them for sporting events you will need about an 8 magnification. I would never get less than 40mm objective lens diameter (that is what the “40” is in an 8 x 40 spec). Less than 40mm can greatly decrease how bright the viewing area becomes. Bushnell or Nikon make some very cheap models under 100 dollars that might just fit the bill. Binoculars.com has a decent way to search by price and they carry a fairly large selection. You can always start searching the web for cheaper prices once you have decided which pair you are going to purchase…good luck!

Those are two words that do not go together when you talk about binoculars. Inexpensive and Good. Try looking for a Bushnell. They make some that are affordable.
