It's usually 18-21" from the top of the stove to the bottom of micro. That's assuming you have a microwave with a blower unit (fan) built in. I wouldn't necessarily put a standard countertop microwave on a shelf above a stove.

i'd search for an over-the-decision microwave. they're available w/o a vented exhaust (only a recirculating fan with a clear out). in case you carry only any MW over the decision, the bottom of it truly is going to be uncovered to warmth from the decision. The over-the-decision jobbies also will contain some sensible mounting hardware.
