She might need a speech pathologist.

My girlfriend says she didn't talk until she was almost two. They brought her to a speech pathologist, who helps them learn how to talk.

In fact, my girlfriend is now studying to be one, because they impacted her life so much. Her parents thought she had a speech or learning disorder, but apparently there are a lot of kids who just take longer to talk than others.

She may actually be saying things you don't understand yet---listen closely---my 15 month old says:

Cerah--cereal
thiten (but one syllable)==Kitten
thuse--juice
na-nah--banana
There are a few others as well.

When your dd reaches for her cup, does she make any noise/sound/babble? If so, she's probably saying milk, juice, or drink or something along those lines. I figured out most of those words by listening to what was said when my son points at something he wants. He just starting some weird babble for "snowman", it's like 'meah'.

If she's not saying ANYTHING besides mama and dada, I'd still not be too concerned. As long as you continue to talk to her--about everything--she'll come around.

Keep up the good work!

First off yes something could be wrong and don't wait until she's two to find out either...get ahold of a Early Intervention program in your area, and ask someone to come out and do an evaluation to find out if something is wrong and if so what can be done about fixing it...here is a # that you can call 1-888-376-8825 and be able to speak with someone who can help...1 - Early Intervention Clearinghouse – maintains and distributes educational materials to families and professionals. 2 - StarNet – Provides training and information to parents and professionals for children birth to five years. I have a two year old who does not talk at all she don't say mama or dada she says nothing, I have her enrolled in Early Intervention and she has speech therapy sessions once a week, my oldest also went thru this and still to this day has speech class at school and she's in the 3rd grade..So yes something could very be wrong, so please check out the sites, call the number, and call your doctor they might even know of an Early Intervention that is in your area that can help out....

Nothing is wrong. That is completly normal. I have twin 16 month old boys and all they can say is Mama, Dada, nite nite, bye. Even the nite nite and bye aren't the clearest.

Every baby develops at their own rate. Try not to compare her to other children. All that will do is make you worry. Keep talking to her and sounding stuff out so she can hear the different sounds. Before you know it you won't be able to get her to shut up.

Not at all. I have a 16 month old who doesnt speak either. Kids just develope at different times and it means nothing at all. She has a few months left. If she's not saying real words by the time she's 2 years, then take her to a doctor. But even then, there is nothing worry about.

Your DD is normal. You should not worry about the small things in life, as long as your child is making the developmental goals in the appropriate time frame. When you go to your 18month check up, ask your doctor for a list of developmental stages and when they should occur. This will give you a guide line of when they should reach these important milestones, but remember, these are just guidelines and not applicable to all children.

I have a 17 month old and he only says a few more words than that. He says alot of mumbo jumbo, but you can really understand about 10 words. Just give your little one time and she will pick up more words, just keep talking to her and reading to her. Good luck!

All kids develop differently. She is fine. My son talked pretty quickly but was still crawling WELL PAST his first birthday. He is now 3 1/2 and PERFECTLY normal. Off the charts mentally and physically. Don't push her. Let her go at her own pace. Sometimes when kids are pushed too hard, they get frustrated and take even longer. You and your daughter will be just fine!

Not at all. That's normal to not be able to speak clearly at that age. My son is 17 months and he is the same way. You can tell that he is trying to say words now, but it's just mumbling and jibberish. That fact that your child understands what you say and comprehends shows she is normal. She'll start speaking clearly before you know it.

my son only ever said one sylable words at 16 months. he would mumble then say a key word, so you knew he was talking about a car, or truck for instance.

he never really came out with a lot of words as such like a full sentence until he was about 4 or 5. I think your baby sounds normal.
