I got a Christmas gift from my boss. We don't get along and I avoid her when I can. I didn't want to hurt her feelings by turning down the gift (she doesn't know I don't like her), after all we have to work together. She bought one for each of us (there are 3 of us total). My question..........do I have to buy her a gift in return? And if so, what? And how much?

you def don't have to give her a gift. bosses usually give gifts during the holiday times. even though you don't like her...you should keep it classy by sending a nice thank you note wishing her a happy holiday.

could the 3 of you get together and buy something from all of you so that you don't have to come up with something on your own?
I had the same situation last year. Fortunately, I have a new boss this year who is wonderful.
Last year I just took her gift & said thank you (it was a gift card for a local department store). The other 3 employees and I put our money together and bought her a nice wreath for her office wall. We spent less than $10 each. If you have to go it alone, maybe a small crystal clock for her desk?

By all means, unless you want to start an office war, do not refuse the gift! Unfortunately, you should return the jesture. But don't feel obligated to go out of your way to purchase an expensive gift. Get her a small plant for her office with some sort of X-mas decoration on it. It's a nuetral gift. Anything else, implies that you see her in the same light as she views you and that may lead to more uncomfortable situations later down the road.

You are not obligated to give her a gift in return. I think it was a nice gesture for her to give you a gift. At least send her a thank-you card. I hope you'll take the opportunity to recognize that your boss is somewhat generous, so she can't be a completely bad person. Maybe this will help you to see the good in her and get along with her better in the future.

Lots of people hate their boss. Hey in life you will meet people that you do not like. So buy her some candles, gift card, or something very practical. My boss is OK and he is a huge coca cola fan and even though i do not favor him i went online and bought him an ornament from the coca cola website. maybe that will open their eyes to how much you are special. you may be valued more as a person for you gift than not giving at all.

People in positions of privilege such as bosses etc do not give gifts with expectation of getting one in return generally speaking.
you could get together with the other/s and get her one gift from all of you, this would be appropriate and probably not expect.
Turning down the gift will probably reveal your feelings

I would graciously accept the gift, turning it down may make it hard for you in the office. I would give her something in return but make it inexpensive .... like a gift card to starbucks or a mug for her desk ... but nothing too great.

Of course you dont have to. People shouldn't give to get and I dont suppose she did either. If she did she's the devil and doesn't deserve a gift
But if you want to be nice and return the favor just do a candle, maybe she'll burn it at the office and then you've rally given it to yourself since you can smell it down the hall.

You don't have to spend too much. I'd spend $10 - $20 or recycle a gift i got from someone else that i had no use for.
