I am using Word 200 and compose blocks of pictures and textboxes (?objects)to send as a postcard to my grandson. If I select and choose "format object" or "borders and shading" the borders go round each picture in the block as well as the surround. Is there any way you can select the border to be on the outside surround only?

You could use the Rectangle tool from the Draw toolbar and draw a rectangle around all the pictures and text boxes.
Format the Rectangle with No Fill to make it transparent (Format - Autoshape - Fill Colour - No Fill...which is above the colours.)
You can now format the Borders of the Rectangle.
