The sole reason for the Battle of Armageddon is the Antichrist's desire to rid the earth of the Jews, God's chosen people, so Jesus cannot return. Scripture tells us that, half way through the Tribulation, the Antichrist will begin to severely persecute the "holy people" (Jews) and kill as many as he can. This triggers the Jews to flee to the mountains of Bozrah, probably to the fortified city of Petra.
Scripture tells us that, while the Jews are there living in safety (since they're protected by God), the Antichrist will gather his troops from all the earth and try to kill them and, in the process, frustrate God's Will, given in the prophesies. So not only is this a battle against the Jews, it's against God, too -- and He takes it VERY personally.
Scripture further tells us the Jews in Petra will beg Jesus to return and save them when they see these troops gathered to kill them. At that time, Jesus will return FIRST to Bozrah (not to the Mt. of Olives, as some teach) to protect His brethren; then, He will go to the Mt. of Olives and save what's left of Jerusalem. So you can see that, if there are no more Jews to beg Jesus to return, He will not return -- which would certainly please the Antichrist!
You implied you're not interested in Scriptural references, but if you want them, send me a message through Yahoo Answers and I'd be happy to oblige.
Peace.
EDIT: "Father K," Ezekiel 38 and 39, which takes place PRIOR to the Tribulation, shows "Islamofascism" will end at that time. Radical Muslims will have very little to do with Armageddon; by that time, they will either follow the Antichrist, or the REAL Christ.

I would imagine just about anything could be used to instigate such a thing. Traditionally it is thought that it will begin with a treaty that will be made with Israel and the antiChrist will be broken. But since we have no idea what the treaty will entail or what will be the impetus for it all, suffice it to say it could simply be an insult to them by another nation which acts as a catalyst drawing in the other nations individually until all become involved. I tmay well be that it will be fought over some new method of growing food in traditionally barren soil, which would cause covetousness in other nations. It could be natural resources, such as oil and the hording of it by another country. In all actuality I doubt anyone will realize they are in the midst of armageddon until it is too late.

Close to the end of time, Muslim with Christians will be friends and they will fight another faith or enemy.
some say now that muslims helped Afghan againt Russia.
some say that muslims and christians are fighting terrorism.
some say tehy will fight communist regimes.
many thoughts.
After their victory, everybody will go home, but the Christians will try to defeat muslims. at that time is the armagedon.
If you understand that, all the prophets talked to their people about the signs of the last days, so the followers are believers.
If Christians understand that they have to follow Muhammad to be called believers.
Islam accept all the prophets of God. all of them have one message << worship God only without any partners and follow the commands >>. all the religions have almost the same teachings about the final days. and this is why the teachings about the last hours is found in islam too.
If we understand that, all the prophets were talking about the believers who will fight in the last days. Christians think that they are the believers. but because they worship other than God they still have the same teachings but they are not the one talked about by the prophets of God.
the believers will be the winner, believe it or not.
At that moment, Satan will be defeated < all these centuries in fighting the words of God > from Adam will be in no vain. the truth won. at that time the Antichrist will appear. he will go on the earth and wherever he find believers, he will say I am your God, he will make the vegetation Grow, the rain fall, the cheap fat some will surrender . for the others he will make the land without any vegetation, no rain, skiny cheap...
the jews will follow him thinking he is the promised messaiah
until Jesus peace be upon him will come and catch him and kill him, and he will brake the cross and kill the pigs.
At that time all will believe in Jesus son of marry, and peace will be on earth, and everybody will be muslims. the apple trees will be fruitful will big apples, many fruits , blessing on earth like the time of Adam. blessed food....
But just before that I forgot to tell you that
Yagog and magog will appear and Jesus will go to the mountains with the believers. everything will be destroyed.
Jesus will pray to God to save them. so God will send a small thing that will penetrate the nose of these yagog and magog to kill them < note: many time God show his power over the arrogant by destroying them by small things>
so the world will no be anymore a place to live in, too much deseases, bad small of death. Jesus again will pray to God and he will send rain and special birds to take the dead bodies away.
Jesus will live 40 years and ide like any human being < mission accomplished>
the mark of the beast on the forehead of the umbelievers .
the last hour will come when there will be no more believer on earth.

The same things that have always driven us to war. I mean look at the world and you see it's really easy to drive man to war,and you mentioned a few already. Or maybe it will be partly what drove Adolph to start the bloodiest war in history, the lust for power, combined with the belief he held that he was doing Gods work to cleanse the world of the detritus of society. Most wars have been started by evil men who used some ideal of the aftermath to justify their actions. It's always a search for greater power but they cannot use that in itself to justify what they do. So they do like the Chinese communists did and put forth this ideal of a great egalitarian society, millions dead and they still don't have that utopian vision, but the leaders have the power they wanted, mission accomplished. And that is really all it's ever been, the vast majority of the people ruling even the free countries of the world are in the deepest parts of their hearts despicable human beings who would gladly send you or your children to their deaths for greater power,or even for a greater place in history. I give the fine example of Gearge Bush, how many have to die to give him his place in history? A million, two million,it doesn't matter to him. The real question is not what could drive mankind to the brink of a war like Armaggedon, the real question is how have we avoided it this long?

That is from the Book of the Revelation, right? The key to the Revelation is found in the Bible. Did you know that Babylon is symbolic for captivity? The Jews were in captivity in Babylon and there was no offering for sin because their temple in Jerusalem had been burned and it was the only place were an offering for sins was accepted by God. The sting of scorpions is symbolic for the sting of death (the sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law). If a person becomes separated from Christ (the vine and branches), he is flown by a giant eagle into the wilderness (where there is no water, a Christian symbol of life and being joined to Christ in baptism), also it is where scorpions live. If a person becomes separated from Christ, he is under the law, and the law brings knowledge of sin. God does not hear people under law who are in sin, so that person is in the city that rules over kings of the earth (Babylon). Armageddon is also symbolic. Maybe, the entire material world opposes Jerusalem which is a symbol for that which is spiritual, unseen, and not of this world.
If a person is walking in darkness, symbols have power and meaning. "Walk in the light that you be not overcome by the darkness;" Paul said, "I have no righteousness of my own, but the righteousness of Christ" (which is by faith in being one with him in baptism).

Open the newspaper. Most of the ingredients for that volatile cocktail are already in place. You've got intense hatred between Israel and all her Arab neighbors. You've got intense distrust between Israel's main ally, the US, and other world superpowers like China and Russia. You've got an increasingly polarized world as the US continues to abuse its superpower status and tear down the mutual trust and respect around the world. And you've got oil that is dwindling in supply and becoming increasingly important to all these nations. Eventually, it will come to a knock-down, drag-out fight and everybody will be involved. It could be sooner than we think IMO.

Why do nations go to any war? Why is the US in Iraq?
Greed is usually a factor - governments have greed for power, corporations have greed for war profits.
Hate is a factor, and war propaganda increases the hate to the point that the public will support a war that hurts them.
In war, people don't do what is in their own best interests, nor do nations.

God will gather the nations but Jerusalem is the reason or Mt. Zion. It's God's most favorite place.
Antichrist will be a factor. The word "anti" in the Greek means (instead of), not opposed to. Although Satan is opposed to God. Satan will play Christ or God or instead of christ.
2Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Armageddon will not be fought over material things. Armageddon will be a war fought over differences in religion. It will be those for God against those who do not believe in God (the Father of Jesus). You may as well pick a side, because one day you will have to.
