I would suggest the animal shelter nearest to you -- even if it is far away. There are many pitbull rescue groups that specialize in finding homes for dogs in need. But, before even adopting a pet, I suggest that you try to amass a little more money before embarking on pet ownership. What will happen if your dog gets sick? If she needs medication or special food that costs more than grocery store kibble? Can you afford to take her to the vet? There are so many hidden costs to pet ownership -- I hope that you are prepared for the responsibility. Good luck.

I would never get a nearly free or free pitbull. If someone is giving away this animal there is a very good chance that your going to end up with a bad dog. You have to realize you can't mess around when you are dealing with pitbulls. There is so much bad breeding with these animals for dog fighting that if you don't get a papered and or family raised dog then you could end up with something that your not happy with. Two things make a good dog. Its breeding and how its raised. Even if you raise it well you can still end up with a dog with issues and problems. When it comes to this particular breed you have to be careful. I have a pitbull and I wanted to be sure I was getting exactly what I wanted. I love seeing people who can spread a better pitbull name by raising a wonderful, sound, sweet dog, that's great around children and other dogs, but this is very hard to do if you don't know what your getting in the first place. With this breed the saying "you get what you pay for" is extremely true. Make sure that if your getting a dog you have the money to raise it well and you are able to get a good dog in the first place

Travel to a shelter! Usually, the shots and deworming will haave already been done, and it's a very reasonable price. My own shelter had a discount on pit bulls because they got too many to place otherwise.

Try petfinder.com, you can type in your postal code and breed, and find one near you.

But please keep in mind, a dog can be quite a financial burden. He or she will probably eat more than you think. Vet visits can get pricey, but you don't want fleas or heartworm to be a problem. Go cheap on the dog bed, just use an old sofa pillow, or find a futon cushion. But don't cut corners on the health of the dog.

you could always advertize in your local paper, online or buy sell swap it magazine that you are looking for a pitbull,at low or no cost, believe me there are people out there who would much rather rehome their pitbull than take it to be euthanized at a shelter, since that is a common occurance in shelter's,getting a pitbull free or at low cost doesn't nessesarily mean it will be a bad dog,but do beware of most dogs that are being rehomed for free,it is because there is a behavioral issue with it,but there are those people out there who just need to find a nice home for the family dog quickly because they are moving, and as we who love pitbulls all know landlords are very discriminating against this breed,it is hard to find a place that accepts them, this is how i get most of my pitbulls or other bully breeds in my rescue, but just be sure if you find a free one you meet the dog and get to know it before taking the dog home, and really grill the people who have it on the reason for giving up a family pet

Find an animal shelter or a humane society online whatever you do dont get it from a petstore or an online breeder, these dogs come from puppy mills. There are soooo many pit bulls that need to be rescued. There are also probably pitbull rescue organizations. Look around you'll find one.

Try local animal shelters/humane societies. Not sure about in AZ, but in other places these organizations have spay/neuter clinics that will have a reduced price or can give you information for organizations that do. Sometimes it may depend on your income, but it all depends. $230 sounds like a lot of money but maybe it is your location. I'm used to like $120. Make sure you check around with different vets if you haven't.

Make sure you do your research on the breed, so you know what you are getting into.

You need to be prepared to socialize, train, and work with the dog daily to make sure he well tempered.

Free or cheap dogs could mean big money in vet bills due to health issues, and training for behavior modification.

I suggest going through a rescue who temperment tests their dogs, and the dogs come vaccinated, wormed, neutered/spayed...

Go to www.akc.org & click on 'breed rescue' for American Staffordshire Terrier, or www.ukcdogs.com for American Pit Bull Terriers. Both are the same breed, just have different names at these 2 registries. Rescues re-home dogs that need a 2nd chance for minimal fees, but you will need to answer screening questions as a potential owner. Good luck.

hmmm..I don't really know what they usually go for, but I know they're not cheap. If you get one thats cheap, its probably not pure bred, registered, or even healthy for that matter. If you buy from a breeder they should take the responsibility to have it dewormed and vaccinnated, but thats not always the case.
