what about on top, an angel of a star??

Judging by what I see around here, colored lights seem to be the clear favorite. As far as a topper - it appears to be just about a 50/50 split between angels and stars, with the occasional teddy bear, dove, or other topper.

When I was kid, we always had colored lights and a star. As kids we thought the colored looked better and it was also what every other tree looked like at family and friends houses, but as we got older my mom changed our tree to gold/white/crystal and used white lights and an angel on top. This year, my first year in my own place, I am using white lights and a star because I am decorating the tree in silver and blue, maybe next year I will change it.

Just from my own personal observations (visiting people's houses, driving through neighborhoods), it seems that white lights are more popular outside the home, while colored lights seem to be more popular inside, i.e. the Christmas tree. I'm the only one in my very large, extended family that doesn't have any colored lights; I use white lights everywhere.

Well...are u asking cause u wanna put the "popular colours" onto ur christmas tree or that u dont wanna. The popular colour-combinations are the (Red,Blue,Green,Yellow) Blinking-non-stop routine...try not to use it though, its like nothing special, go for the new-age White-green/White-Red(the routine must be attractive too) or anything else combo...they look real good and ppl tend to be more aware of it compared to traditional christmas trees...I'd go for the angels with tiny stars outlining it..my old one came with a wand...anyway, have fun doing the x-mas tree, i always love mine take care :)

White is traditional. Colored is fun. Angel is traditional. Star is fun. None are better than the other, just depends what you like.

If I want clear lights I can look at the bare bulbs. My tree has 500 colored lights

White are nice, but when thinking about Christmas, and what made me very excited, were the multi-colored lights. One dimensional doesn't cut it.

White! You can play with a lot of colors when you are using white lights.
And definitely an angel. Because it creates a more dramatic effect!
