Sounds to me like she needs to be crate trained.

This is commonly known as separation anxiety. It can come in mild to severe forms and a lot of what triggers it is actually the owners behavior (sorry.) So, you need to look at how long you are leaving you dog alone. Are you leaving for work all day and then coming home and leaving again in the evening? Dogs get bored, so make sure that you have plenty of safe toys for them to play with while you are gone. If none of this works, you can work on crating or sectioning the dog off in a smaller area of the house to keep him/her from destroying your stuff.

But...if this is a new behavior, look at what has changed. Maybe your schedule, a new family member or something. That is probably what triggered it.

Our dog used to do this until I scolded him with a newspaper, dragged him to the mess he made, and then took him down to the basement and put him in a kennel for about 2 hours. I had to do this for about two weeks until he understood what I was trying to teach him. Now I can leave him alone and everything is fine. Also, I bought him a few doggie toys, like a ball, a tire, that he could chew or play with. This way the dog is not bored.

i agree crate training is a good option. Or just pick a certain area for the dog in the house blocked off with baby gateswith its toys and stuff it wont be able to mess up. I am sure the dog does want affection and gets bored.

S/he misses you and is lonley... and possibly just has not been trained to know how to behave properly when owners are gone.

This is very common and obedience training should help.

Think of it this way... what does s/he have when you are gone? Probably an empty house and a few toys that are no fun unless someone throws them. Dogs have a pack mentality and you are the pack. Training is a must.

Good luck.

Like most of the answers, I agree with crate training. Dogs are den animals, so putting her in a crate is humane. She will adapt well to this & eventually go in her crate all the time when you are getting ready to leave. It will be her space. Dogs need their own little space.

I saw this problem on a dog programme once.
The owners made such a FUSS over leaving the dog, "oh sweetie gonna miss you" and upon returning..."oh I missed you ,( pet pet pet).
The dog went crazy just to be rewarded with attention.
DON't make a fuss upon leaving and returning. Ignore the pooch.

The puppy is bored and anxious. Crate train her and leave some toys for her to chew on. Believe it or not, dogs prefer small cave like places so they feel protected.

What works for me is to keep my dog occupied, so I bought him a couple of chew toys and a couple of Kongs it keeps him occupied for hours, its a rubber cone looking toy but you can buy different treats and place them inside of the toy he loves it I fill the Kong with doggy peanut butter and cookies and leave them around the house with different treats and he forgets about everything... It really works and they have different styles and sizes.... and they are not expensive they have them at any pet store....

Take her out for walks more often. Bring her along for joyrides. Spend at least two hours with her or more one day. Whenever you leave the house, tie her up and pet her and talk to her gently like she is your own child.

Your dog is getting even with you for leaving it. My dog did that for years so I put up a gate and made him stay in the kitchen. You need to reain the dog otherwise it's going to get worse.
