weekend travel to puerto rico?

Hey I am planning to study abroad in the Dominican Republic and I was thinking about doing a weekend trip to San Juan. Is it safe for me, being a 19 year old female, to travel there with a few other female friends? What areas should I avoid? Which areas should I definitely visit. What precautions should I take? Which airlines have flights from the dominican repub to PR? What should I do for transportation if I choose to leave San Juan? How safe and clean are hostels there?

A trip to P.R. from Dominican Republic can be $300 or more. If you take the Ferry from la Capital you'll be there in 1 day and its cheaper. P.R. is safer than Dominican Republic. Of course never go alone in the night, don't go t gethos or Barriadas....But yeah everything is very safe. You should go to Old San Juan, to Plaza las Americas(biggest mall), Condado (very Fancy*),rio piedras(cheap shopping), El Yunque(rain Forest). Ponce(museum,Parque de Bomba,La Cruz)...The beaches!!!! Try not to get a Taxi....they rip you off! You can try to find a bus service...The hotels are clean,safe but expensive! So try to find a cabin, is better if you go with a lot of friends....American Airlines and Eagle flight to P.R. from Dom Rep. You can flight form Romana,Capital or Punta Cana...I know all this because I'm 50%Dominican and 50% Puerto Rican!! Hope it helps and enjoy your stay!

I will talk about security. If you feel secure in Dominican Republic ... Puerto Rico will be a paradise. It is very secure. There are policewomen(man) everywhere. By night, the flashing lights are almost always running. I went there 3 weeks in November, I had a Jeep Liberty and I was just as many people. My car didn't attract the attention because many people are having expensive cars.

I walked by nights from rich to poor areas and never people scared me. I visited about 20 cities, walk in some forests and no problem.

Dominican Republic is well more dangerous for everything, mainly the stealing.

ITS BEAUTIFUL THERE!!im come from puerto rico and live there,well theres Santurce:its a place full of dominicans,and prostitutes,drugs so see at day don`t try at night so you should avoid that place...but the rest its beautiful... you should try to go Culebra theres the most beautiful beach ever "flamenco" (get the ferry).And of course Isla Verde its full of hotels and the beaches are the BEST...and theres Vieques its by Culebra its beutiful.Try Fajardo , Isabela , Ponce ,CABO ROJO!!! well try to avoid rio piedras and santurce...and i would definetly choose puerto rico not because i live there but because i`ve got to Dominican Republic and its a bit dangerous we never left the hotel ...IMAGINE...for transportation find th bus its better...the hotels are the most atractive thing that ive ever seen in puerto rico...American airline "I THINK" its better always used it...well good luck!!
