There are 9 ways to skin a cat, according to naval folklore. This saying comes from a euphamism for the punishment administered at the authority of Captains of naval vessels with a whip known as a "cat-o-nine-tails."
It was a baton with nine braided cords coming out of it used to inflict pain on wrongdoers.
People used to actually kill cats for fun and devise different ways to do it. Before the plague, people thought cats were evil animals. However, if a cat has 9 lives, and you skin a cat, you kill it. If you skin it 9 different ways, you kill it 9 different times.

I don't now about skinning a cat ,but I would certainly like to find a way to stop the dirty creatures from crapping in my flower beds.
