Im watching someones dog for 2 weeks as well as my own dog. This dog does NOT listen at all, is 7 mths old and is a 60 lb animal. I cant walk him, or tell him anything. My dog who is a month older is well trained, but seems to have no effect on the other dog at all. I don't know what to do. I have no control over him and its driving me crazy. Please help!!

I'm sitting a 7 mth old dog who is 60 lbs plus. The owners claim they have taken a course yet he doesnt listen whatsoever. He has a harness, short lead and a choke collar..the walking is not improving whatsoever. I figured my dog (trained) being around might help..but its not. This dog also barks constantly when put in a kennel. He has not been kennel trained, or trained at all I dont think as he doesnt listen, jumps, barks, etc etc. I have him for one more week. I cant even leave him out on a chain as he is very needy and will bark. I already have complaining neighbours and the owners are out of town. Any other suggestions than what i have heard so far. I don't agree with harsh training, but I'll use anything at this point as he has already broken one of my glass coffee tables, a couple chains outside and scratched (badly) one of my doors.

Put your hand on the dog's head firmly and keep it there without letting the dog move. In dog language you are telling it you are ahead of it in the dog pack. That means it has to listen to you. Never let a dog sit by you and place it's paw on you. In dog language it is saying it's higher in the pack than you and doesn't have to listen to you.

Start with a simple command like sit. Bring the dog's head up with a leash if necessary while pushing down on it's rump while saying "sit". You don't need to yell or keep repeating it. The dog is not senile. Praise it when it obeys. Practice this a few times a day but don't over do it.

Don't feed the dog before you. As dogs are pack animals, the alpha eats first and then on down the line. You new (visiting) dog should be eating last. That is another way of letting it know you are the boss.

Remember to yourself that you are the boss. Don't let the dog do anything that suggests it is dominant over you. Once it has been established that you are over it in the pack, you shouldn't have anymore problems.

A dog that is 7 months old is still considered a puppy and needs to be trained properly. Evidently the owner of the 60 pound pup did not train him right away. Now you are stuck watching a pup that won't follow directions. The only thing you can do is to try to train him or put him on a chain to let him out or put him in a kennel.

Suffer through the 2 weeks as best you can and then require that the owner pay you more for all the trouble and stress. It is completely reasonable to charge more if the dog is not well-behaved.

When you walk him, have a harness if possible and keep a short lead so that you can control jumping and pulling. Try training him a little- when he listens (if ever) use a clicker (if you have one) and give a small piece of treat, and do the same if he walks nicely on lead.

That is the problem with dog sitting. You have to be very patient and not lose your "cool". I would just do the best that you can because you agreed to take care of it. Having your dog around, may be making the other dog to hard to control. Try keeping them separate. You are just going to have to be patient. Bribe him with treats. You may also want to suggest dog obedience classes to his owner when he returns. I know how you feel. I had to take care of an insane springer spaniel once during the fourth of July weekend and it barked nonstop because of the fireworks. Neighbors were calling and complaining and I got frustrated because it wasn't trained at all. Just do the best you can without losing your temper.

The dog obviously hasn't been trained as well as yours has been. You have the dog for two weeks so make the best of it. Try to train him or her simple commands or just simply walking on a leash. You trained your dog so you should be able to start training this dog. When the owner asks you to watch the dog again in the future, borrow the dog for an afternoon and see if they have been trained any better before obligating yourself to two weeks of watching this dog. It is your responsibility to watch the dog for the two weeks though so you might as well make the best of it.

Put him in a crate when he's being a pain. Maybe he's not as smart as your dog. Be patient, maybe you can teach him a few things while you have him. Have you tried a choke collar when walking him?
