try this if you do not have someone to rub the tension out for you...tilt you chin down to you chest three times, then back as far as your neck will go three times...now tilt your head to each side three times (do not bring your shoulder up to meet it)...return your head to the normal position then let fall forward...rotate it in that position (as far extended as you can al around) clockwise three times and then counter clockwise three times (you will hear lots of pops...that is the tension) PENNY P

There is a great way to "kill 2 birds with one stone" and that is to grab that thing and work it and when you arrive at completion you will have released a bit of that tension. That exercises the shoulders also...

The best way to get rid of it is stretching the area, hold your hand together and raise them slowly above your head, hold for 5 seconds, then slowly bring out your arms and stretch up them out. Do this very slowly also heat on the neck area really makes a difference. Good luck

Use hot compresses then exercise the area then use cold compresses to avoid swelling.
If you are on meditation for depression ask your doctor if cymbolta medication is right for you. This medication is good for depression and also treats joint pain associated with depression.
See your doctor in case you have pulled a muscle. Pain in the neck or shoulder's can be a sign of TMJ joint disease also, do you clench your teeth allot? this can cause TMJ
