I have two cats that always hang around the house. We have fed them, gave them water etc. The big cat will let me pet 'em and stuff, but that little cat won't. What's wrong?

Sounds like they are not used to human attention. Be patient and keep feeding them and trying. Don't push it though let the cat come to you, eventually they will trust you if you give them both time.

If you just sit outside and read or do something when the cat is around then he'll have time to observe you and won't be so afraid of you. You can look at him some and say a few things sweetly to him, but then ignore him and let him get comfortable. You'll find that he'll get curious and try to get closer and closer to you. You'll have to be very patient though. Even if he doesn't try to approach, you're still making him less afraid by just being there. He'll come around, especially when he sees you loving on the big cat.

If they are strays, they have probably had some bad experiences with humans. The little cat may not be as forgiving as the bigger cat. And cats have very individual personalities. Little cat may just not be very demonstrative. Take it slow, keep feeding. If you find they do not have owners and you want to make them yours please fix them.
Another thing you may have to consider if they are strays is that the little one may not be feeling well. If he/she has had no vet care, he could have an abscess or an infection. If he won't let you touch him, there isn't a lot you can do. If you decide to make them your cats, see if the local humane society let you borrow a humane trap to catch them and take them to the vet.
They will both scream with this "betrayal" but after they see the benefits of housecatism, they will settle down.

well these cats were feral (wild) before they came to u! and now the big one seems to have earned ur trust! but the little one is still scared it sounds! so just keep doing what ur doing and if possible to catch the small cat try to catch it every now and then and pet it then give it some food and let it run!(thats how we tamed our stray/ wild cats now they r so great!) or put the food down and sit by the bowl (it may take a few hours) just let the cat kno he can trust u by giving him his space at first! but if u can it would be a good idea to take them to ur local animal shelter to get them fixed and find homes! or if u wanna keep them take them to the vet to get shots and get fixed! hope this helps! good luck!

They are feral cats which means they have gone wild.

Both cats know that you are a friendly human (otherwise you probably wouldn't know they exist) but don't expect them to jump up on your lap.

The big cat is probably a dominant male and "allowing" you to pet him in order to mark you to other cats as "his."

The small cat may be a female or a young male. If it's a female, all she really cares about is getting nutrients into her system to nurse or gestate her litter(s). If it's a young male, he ain't stupid enough to move in on Big Guy's territory.

Just sit around close enough for the little one to see you. Act like you don't even know he's there. If you catch him looking, you might say something quietly to him. Do something interesting like lacing your shoes to catch his attention. Whatever you do, don't try to grab him. He won't trust you after that. Good luck!
