Cats mouth off all the time. If you matched up each time my Lucy let out a wail, with the North American Hospital records you could prove that when she cries, somebody dies, or is born or drinks Coca-Cola.
When a cat cries it usually means- I want out/in, open this door, human and be quick about it. I only keep you around for your opposable thumb anyway.

Going to die... hmmm.

My guess is that wives-tale started during the dark ages when cats were considered messengers of the devil.

That being said: it depends on what kind of cry you are talking about. Cats have amazing intonation abilities, greater than dogs in fact.

When a female is in heat, she will let out horrible ear-splitting wails in order to attract male attention.

Simple meows may only mean "let me out," "my food bowl is empty," or "have you smelled my litterbox lately?"

Lower whines can mean "I don't feel well," or even "I think you love Fluffy more."

Higher-pitched chirpy meows mean they are trying to talk to you. Cats hear people talking to each other and (no really, this is true) are just trying to add to the conversation.

My wife died recently. One thing that bothered me that I did not understand is why a cat came to our basement window, cried for almost two hours. I thought nothing of it because I was to busy taking care of things and getting ready for work. Later that afternoon I got a call. My wife had passed away. All I can really put in to this conversation is, try not to become a victim of your devices, distractions can steer us away from remembering the obvious and forgetting the strange or awkward advice. I should of stopped and thought why we never have cats come to our window, let alone come to the basement window when we were there and cry for two hours. Please forgive me honey.

complicated to declare - my cat does it at night, often interior of 20-half-hour human beings turning off the lighting fixtures fixtures and going to mattress. I yell for her as quickly as and then i don't pay attention a peep out of her - a brilliant number of the time as quickly as I try this, surely, she comes working upstairs and is going to sleep on her mattress interior the hallway.
