Tongues originated in the Bible on the Day of Pentacost and was the starting day of the church. The Holy Spirit came down and indwelt believers. At that time there were Jews from all over the world assembled because of the Feast of Pentacost and the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and they were given the miraculous power to speak in the 16 different languages that those Jews from around the world spoke. There were 3,000 people saved that day and added to the church. These people then returned to their lands and took the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them. It was truly a miraculous event and began the Chruch in a wonderful and powerful way. Tongues ceased shortly after that and has never reappeared.
The modern movement called the tongues movement which started the Pentacostal church has no similarity to that at all. It was started by Charles Fox and Agnes Osmond in 1901, and once it caught on was the start of the Pentacostal movement which started in 1906. They do not speak in languages, but bable in incoherent sounds. Ligguists have studied it extensively and all agree it is not language, therefore it is not supernatural. Anyone can do it, including non Christians. It is normally considered a psychic experience in which the conscience mind gives way to the subconscious mind and since reason does not exist in the subconscious the sounds come out disjointed. It becomes an addiction to those who do it because it causes quite a euporic sensation.
Any tongues believer could easily prove that it is supernatural if they just would speak to someone in a language that they have never learned. But it just doesn't happen.
Stick with the Bible, rejoice in what God has given us and don't try to fabricate that which God has not given.

Speaking in tongues, when practiced according to the Bible, is a sign from God given to warn unbelievers of impending judgment.
Because of this point, Scripture provides limiting conditions for its use within the Church, including the requirement that an interpretation should be given (also in the case of a visitor speaking a foreign language).
Furthermore, tongues were a characteristic of apostolic ministry, to confirm the Word of God in a time when the Church was not yet established in all its diversity and when the revealed Word of God was not yet completed.
The destruction of the temple closed the days of the Jewish era. With the establishment of the new Christian testimony, which included Jewish Christians, the exercise of the sign-gifts, including speaking in tongues, simply stopped.

It means absolutely nothing these days ....except maybe to indicate a person is in the wrong religion.
Jesus said to his apostles the would preach to ALL nations.
That means various languages.
The apostles were all Jews, bilingual at best.
To jump over this hurdle, God gave them the ability to speak various languages without having to follow a language course.
Instantaneous! Acts 2:1-4.
Please note the purpose of this in Acts 2:11.
It helped establish Christianity in a very short time.
Once Christianity got underway, there was no more need for this particular miracle, so it faded out, as prophecied. 1 Corinthians 13:8.

I think it's speaking in an language where only God can understand you . Some people are allowed to have the gift of interpreting other tongues. Mostly I seen them in the Pentecostal, Holiness, and Apostolic churches. It is unknown to the speaker and it means the presence of the Holy Ghost is with you.

The term glossolalia is derived from the Greek glossa, "tongue" and lalia, "to talk." The phenomenon is not just a single utterance of strange words but a recurrence of such utterances as in a series. The first occurrence of the apostles speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is Biblically recorded in the Book of Acts 2:4, as happening on Pentecost. It is recorder "they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

You'll get a prayer language from God. It's all in the Bible. If tongues are used during a service, they'll need someone with the gift of interpreation to give the meaning. If you are interested you'll find a lot about it in the book of Acts and in 1 Corithians chapter 14.

Usually the reward of tongues manifests itself as an exclusive and even brilliant potential to gain knowledge of a overseas language, certainly while the learner is meant to evangelise the gospel in that language. This is traditionally given in locations just like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Missionary Training Center, wherein 2 months of language guideline, combined with doctrinal and instructing guideline, equips many younger guys and females to speak with persons of different languages and cultures. In a few circumstances, the Lord bestows the reward of interpretation of tongues so persons can appreciate Latter-day Saint missionaries who've most effective 2 months of language guideline. ;zero) He is aware of our character strengths and weaknesses. A much less common, although no much less priceless, expression of the reward of tongues is while a minister of God have to supply a message, lesson, or sermon and a able and sincere translator isn't to be had. On the day of Pentecost, persons from many locations of Europe and Asia heard Peter and different church leaders hold forth, however all of them understood. (On moment idea, this instance is a higher example of the reward of the translation of tongues, however you get the proposal). The 3rd manner this reward is expressed is on the whole most commonly counterfeit. Yes, to a few it's given to talk within the tongue of angels, however that rather is not going to do something for someone until any person with the reward of deciphering tongues is reward and invaluable to support.

There are two purposes, one is a private prayer language and the other is for the edifying of the church. This is when God speaks to the church body through a person giving a message in tongues and another give the interpretation that god tells him or her.

FR K was right but lets me explain further.
The word tongues means languages. When the apostles were in the upper room after Jesus' ascension, tongues of fire were cast upon them from the holy spirit. After this they could speak in a language that people from different countries could ALL understand at once!
At that time was the Jewish celebration Pentecost. There were many Jews from other countries in Jerusalem. Many spoke different languages or tongues. When the apostles came down they started speaking to them the gospel and everyone understood at once! Read it: Acts 2 Esp verse 6!
2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews and converts to Judaism Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
It was not gibberish it was a language that ALL could understand. Now what was this purpose? It was a miracle so non believers may believe. It was a sign to UNBELIEVERS now, look in
1 corth 14
22Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.
