Actually the latest version of Windows XP is Windwos Vista. The best is Window XP since Vista hasn't been tested by the general population.

Windows XP is the workstation version of Windows 2003. Every Windows NT type version has come out with both a desktop or workstation version and a server version - slight kernel differences. The version of Windows NT,2000, XP, Vista (workstation) so the latest version of Windows XP is Vista.

If you mean the latest version of Windows Xp is Windows XP service pack 2 which is a complete different OS the the original Windows XP.

No the funny thing asbout it is that Windows XP came out before Windows 2000, so Windows XP is actually the intergration of Windows 9X brought to a new environment.

Windows in it's early years was a DOS base OS, which meant it needed DOS to run and you will find this true of all version of Windows non-server version until you get to Windows Milliminum.

Which was a huge disappiontment due to Microsoft's attempt to intergarte a multi-threading OS with a single threading desktop OS, all due to IBM OS/2 WARP.

So you really had 3 version of Windows in the past: Windows NT (Network or some will tell you New Technology) both Server and Workstation and a DOS based version of Windows 1.X, 2.X, 3.X and 9.X

Now day you only have 2 versions of Windows, they are all NT or Network version. Microsoft will be releasing it's Vista version soon as I am sure if you checked any website when purchasing a computer they say Vista Compatible.

Now Windows XP SP 2 Didn't come out until the release of Windows 2003, once again it's a completely different OS then the original version. They need to bridge the gap with the failed Windows Milliminum (Windows ME) OS which forced the release of XP.

Think about the support line Windows 98 was supported long after Windows ME. Some May argue that Windows ME was the home user version of Windows XP, but it's not it's just another failed OS similar to DOS 4.X

I know too much info just wanted to share.

The first versions of Windows XP were XP Home and XP Pro. Newer versions include XP Media Center and a 64-bit version of XP. There is also a new operating system that is rumored to come out in 2007 that used to be called Longhorn, but, the new name for it is Windows Vista. Windows Vista will be DirectX 10 compatible and should be the best; however, since it isn't out as of yet, XP Pro has been my favorite for a while.
