The directions say to use 2 times a day for 3 days and then stop because frequent or prolonged use can cause nasal congestion to worsen. The last time I used it was 5 days ago. I'm still congested. I've tried saline nasal spray but it's not as effective as Afrin. The last thing I want to do is make this worse. How long do I have to wait to use Afrin again?

I should think that being off of it for 2-3 days or so would be enough time. Sometimes when I have a really bad cold, I use it every other day. But of course you have to stop if you notice that the relief you get only lasts an hour or two. That's probably a sign that your body is "addicted" to it.

The reason why Afrin should be used no more than 3 days is because the congestion can actually get worse if you keep using it. I would suggest waiting at least 7 days before starting Afrin again, using saline nasal spray in lieu of Afrin.

If i am not mistaken afrin is a decongestion- oxymetazoline. Nasal spray is a steroid. Both has different mechanism of action. You will not get adicted to both of these. To get a better explaination of these two differences consult ur GP. You should never use decongestion for prolong period of time. Maximum of 1 week-2 weeks only. The effectivity of afrin as a decongestion will be absent as ur body got used to the chemical. there is something called rhinitis medicamentosa due to prolong use to decongestion. Nasal spray as used for allergic rhinitis. Sort of a anti inflammatory that avoids congestion of nose/ runny nose/ sneezing. so get back to your symptoms.. was it allergic rhinitis or cold due to othe reason? consult ur doctor :)

Don't use that Afrin stuff .. it's bad for you and habit forming.

Better to use the steroid nasal sprays, but you need a prescription from the doctor.

If you have nasal congestion, try Sudafed. Nowadays you have to show ID to get it, though, if you live in the US

Go to a health food store and get SILVER COLLOIDAL nasal spray! This stuff saved my life! look it up on the net, I use it all the time and there is no limit on use!

The problem with Afrin is that your body can become dependent on it. That is why they tell you not to use it so frequently. Personally, I like the caplet of Tylenol Cold as a decongestant.
