make a character sketch of him, analyze him. if he's a line, what kind? straight? crooked? curved? broken? movement: fast, slow, circular, no diection, like that of a falling leaf? if he's a color, what'll he be? when you fully understand him, his feelings, his frustrations, his goals in life... then it will be easier to internalize. wait, was he the one who believed in john proctor? i'm not good at names. have you watched the movie? winona ryder and daniel day-lewis (alryt, im not sure if that was his name). it'll help give you a pattern, but not something to imitate. i don't know if there are other movies you can watch...

Miller gives a good intorduction to Hale in his introduction. Read about the trials & find out about what life was like in Salem at the time. Study what the other characters say about Hale & how they react to him. Read & reread the play many many times. Hale is a changed man by the end of the play. Think about your voice, the language of play, your body language, etc. It's a wonderful play & a wonderful part - enjoy.

Well read over the play write down what you learn about Hale through what Miller has written. Also when in rehearsal if you think how if you were Hale you would be acting. Obviously resarch into the period where witch trials where happening in America would help greatly.
