Let him know that you enjoy and appreciate your relationship more as friends, and that you thought maybe it would work out as more than friends, but you were wrong. Tell him that you value his friendship and never ever want to lose him, and he is special in every way to you, as a friend. Hope this helps you out a bit. :)

Stop the dating game before he reads too much into it. The longer you date the more invested he will become. Break it off cleanly but kindly if possible.

Since you two are such good friends I would be honest with him. If he respects your friendship he's going to want you to be happy. He's going to be hurt, there's no getting around that, but hopefully he'll get over it and continue to be your friend. Good luck!

a really good book to read about break-ups is "It's Called a Break-Up Cause It's Broken." How do I know? I read it, after a horrible break-up and I survived!

Were you ever into him? By the way, if you guys are not too serious, he should take it pretty well. However, if you guys have at it for a while, be careful. He might fall harder than you anticipate.

Honesty is less painful than lying to someone. Just be kind and honest.
