They are only embarrassing if there is another person in the bathroom to hear and smell.... but better in the bathroom than anywhere else!

Worse for you (the farter) or worse for the other people in the bathroom ("fartees"?)?
I think that the amplified sound would be worse for the fartees, because they will be jarred from their peaceful just-relaxing-and-taking-a-dump experience; the amplified smell would be worse for the farter, because you would have to just sit there and suffer through the stench until you can wipe, stand up, zip and buckle, flush and leave the rancid air of the toilet cubicle.
But that's just my 2 cents...

Well I am a quite gassy person and used the toilet cubicle earlier in my office. Nothing came out but burbling methane and Im sure I heard someone in a cubicle nearby giggling!? I say sound is worse than smell.

Smell without a doubt, but who cares, it's a public restroom, if someone has a problem with it they can go f*ck themselves.

I would say definitely sound as easily identified whereas with smell you can blame somebody else just by your reaction LOL
