Never never never hit a dog!!!!!!!! I would have to go with your stepmother. If it's bad give it negative reinforcement, good positive. Even though pitbulls are stronger then most breeds you still shouldn't hurt them.

I can't stress this enough: THERE ARE NO BAD DOGS, ONLY BAD BREEDING. If a dog is poorly bred, as are many popular breeds, it brings out the worst characteristics. If they are not trained, they are a handful. You got him at four weeks old? I'd say he's poorly bred because any good and responsible breeder knows that you don't separate the puppy from its mother for at least 8 weeks. Someone that separates the puppy out earlier probably also practiced indescriminate breeding. The best thing you can do is to sign the both of you up for obedience classes. Pitbulls don't do well chained up. They also don't do well when you use pain or fear tactics to get them to obey you so for heaven's sake don't smack your dog. That can make it start to bite. And never leave any animal alone with small children, no matter what the animal or breed.

If you hit any puppy, you will make it fearful, nervous, agressive, and miserable. People like your father have made pitbulls into a very unpredictable breed. You train a pitbull like any other breed with alot of love and patience. You never hit or yell! Use tons of verbal praise along with treats and playtime. Firmly say "no" if it does something wrong like nip or jump. I think you know how bad it is too hit a dog. It just makes it a nervous wreck. It is also animal cruelty. It makes me sick that there are so many people that own pitbulls out there that beat them into submission. Pitbulls are also not the most intelligent breed so they require alot more patience than a Lab or a German Sheperd. By the way, did your father hit you growing up? My guess is "yes" and I bet you'll never go to a 4 year college and have a good career, am I right? I know I am, sad but true. People are so much like animals.

I have a two year old pitbull and I wanted to be sure that I raised it properly so she would know who was dominate but at the same time she was loving and sweet. I really don't believe that either of your parents are correct in this situation. If you hit a dog it can go one of two ways. The dog will either be very submissive to you, or it could turn out to be even more violent. If the only thing you do is yell then the dog won't know that their are repercussions to being bad. In this case (especially with a pit) you have to take a middle ground. What I did with mine was if she was bad (and depending on what she did) I would let her know she had done something wrong and yell at her and show her why I'm yelling and then put her in her place. (her cage) The main thing you have to remember is to stick with one thing so the dog understands what going on. If you always are changing how you discipline them then they don't get it. I also suggest reading a pit book that can give you a better understanding to pit bulls and how to train and discipline them without turning them into that "typical" pit.

NEVER hit or beat a pitbull!!! They react very well to POSITIVE training methods. Hitting them will only cause aggression and distrust of people...not a good thing.
Make sure you get your dog neutered or spayed, as this will help make training easier as the dog will be more focused on you than finding a mate. www.pbrc.net has a spay/neuter fund and can help you get this done.
Make sure you socialize the puppy well! Allow it to meet as many different friendly people as possible. This will help your dog grow into a sound, well rounded adult.
Ignore bad behaviors. Praise and treat for good ones. That is basically how I train my dogs, and I have 5 here right now!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7Ug
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Don't hit him unless he bites you intending to harm you. Hitting will only make him afraid of you, which will make him not want to come when you call him or even be near you b/c he'll be so scared. If you just use a stern tone and tell him no when he is bad and praise/treat him when he is good you'll accomplish a lot more. Do NOT spank him for going potty inside. Just clean it up and make sure you take him outside to go potty several times a day and treat him when he does it. Eventually he'll learn that he gets a treat when he pees outside and nothing when he goes inside. Then slowly stop giving the treats once he does it for about a month and he should continue doing it. I did this with my pitt and he was housebroken within a few weeks. Dogs learn much better from positive reinforcement than from negative b/c they are incapable of comprehending WHY you are hitting them and just learn to fear you.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/Vj6Qt
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

pit bulls have a bad reputation that is not true . it all depends on how the owner treats the dog. your father is 100% wrong. positive reinforcement. when the dog is good always pet and treat the dog. when the dog is bad say "no" and teach the dog what you want it to do immediately afterward. take the dog to a reputable trainer. this can be inexpensive and so much more easier training for you and the dog.DO NOT let your father hit the dog, this will result in aggression later on. remind your father that he could be ripped to shreds when the dog has had enough abuse.

You never hit a dog. There's no reason for it. If you take the time to properly train and positively reinforce that training, you'll have a happy well mannered dog.
