I have seven dogs Labs, Saints and Pekes. Most dogs are territorial. Huskies for some reason have a tendencies to let the humans guard more. All of my dogs guard but to different degrees. My Saints are quick to bark at unusual sounds but back off completely. My Labs will bark and one will hold the front line so to speak. The Labs will posture more. The Pekes will bark and hide under the couch? Every dog breed can react differently. Some are more prone to guarding some to alerting and some could care less. Akita's are known for their guarding and fighting abilities. They also can be quite vocal and their size makes them a good deterrent . The way your dog is raised and its natural personality determine its ability or desire to guard..

Here is a story of a fearlessly faithful guardian. I had a red male dobermann. His former owner said he was strange and quite glued to him when he wanted a fierce guardian. Feeling sorry for the unloved dog, we took him in. Simba was constantly at the door waiting for a pat, my mother didn't like him, in fact despised his constant begging for attention. Living in a crime-infested area, we never seemed to have unwanted visitors. Our house-girl said that rumors were flying around about our dog who never left the front door, sighed like a human all night while his tail beat an eerie rythm against the door. That kept them away.Anyway, once Mum was alone at home and an armed thief broke in through a window. Simba heard the noise and went to the window, finding it open. Sensing this was strange, he glided almost noiselessly through the window and followed the thief who was surprised at seeing my Mom in. Actually, they both caught sight of each other simultaneously and froze. Without a word or gesture made, Simba sensed the man was an intruder. When he started growling, the guy tried to shoo him away with his coconut -splitting knife. Simba immediately lunged at the man's thigh, and the guy pierced his flank with a stab. Simba didn't let go even as he was being cut savagely. By then my screaming mother was halfway across the garden to the neighbor's place. They came back finding Simba a bloody mess on the floor, still growling with the little stregnth he had at the fleeing thief.
He was well patched up by our vet, and had a good blood transfusion. He is still heavily scarred where the fur hasn't grown back, but the ugly marks increase the love and admiration we now all have for him.

Yes, my dog Jake (a German Shepard x Border Collie mix) has protected me and my home. Jake and I lived alone at the time and he would sleep in hall right outside of my bedroom. One night he woke me up with some really ugly growling and snarling. He would move between me and the doorway, checking on me and warning off the would be intruder. I got out of bed and found that the motion light over my back deck had been triggered. I had this light set at at a fairly low sensitivity because my house backed to woods and there were lots of critters around (like squirrels and raccoons) and I didn't want them setting the light off all the time. I'm convinced that there was a person at my back door trying to break in; and because Jake was there with me, the intruder (or God forbid worse) was scared off and left.

If you are looking for a "guard dog" then look for your larger breeds. German Shepards are known for their great hearing and strong drive to defend. But really the biggest reason a dog will protect a person is that they want to...a strong bond between owner and dog will go a lot further than breeding. Go to the local shelter or humane society and adopt a dog that you like and that is in need of a home. A lot of times it is the bigger dogs at these places that have the least chance of finding a new home.

Good luck--and be careful. A dog can't protect you from everything, so be smart and take care of yourself too.

Yes, My black lab Josie has protected both me and my home before. She protected me once when we were at a friends house and a guy that came with her boyfriend grabbed my arm. Josie quickly got between me and the guy and sat there not growling just watching and she had the hair on her back standing up.

She protected my house when someone was trying to break in one night. She started barking and growling and staring out the window. It turned out that I had a person prowling around my house. The next day I found out that my neighbor had her car broke into and gas stolen out of her husband's truck.

Josie is never aggressive she only barks when something needs my attention ( dinner is burning ,someone is outside that shouldn't be, etc) She loves kids and meeting people is very polite and obedient.

I have a wonderful, sweet, and wussie of a pitbull. Although she is very protective of my family and myself. Even if we are tickling eachother she freaks out cause she thinks that someone is being hurt. She doesn't bite or anything but she sits there and barks to make sure you know that shes there and if anything happens she will not be happy. She guards the door all the time and barks at anything that comes to the door. She knows my friends and freaks out everytime they come to the door. She is so excited to see them, but if she doesn't know the person we have to greet the person with happy voices and such so she knows that they aren't a threat. As soon as the person is inside and is "ok" to her standards she's all over them licking them and sitting on their lap if they are on the couch. She thinks shes a lap dog. There have been a few times that people whom I don't feel comfortable with have come up to the door and they leave when they see her barking at the door. They don't come back so it makes me wonder if they weren't supposed to be there. I live in a fairly big house and it is scary when I am home alone. Sometimes is makes weird noises. But I know I am safe when shes there with me. Even though when I am alone I also have our alarm on with out the motion detectors on :) Hey I am a chick what can you do? ;)

she has also NEVER bitten anyone!

I have a Dobe/lab mix and he is the most alert watch dog .One noise and he is up and searching to find what it is . He barks at strangers that approach but had never snapped anyone until I had my daughter . when she was a baby my husband and I were on our porch with her in the evening and the neighbor guy came over to talk. Tonka sat there very calm and quiet until he reach to touch her and he almost took the guys hand off. I have never had a incident since but my husband will let him out with him at night to smoke and if he says GET EM he will run off the porch and circle the house in great speed looking for something or someone. He is 7 now and has taught my young boxers the same protective habits.

PS . We never taught him a thing . He did it all on his own.

Yes, my American Eskimo Dog, Tiffany, is protective when the need is there. In the summer of 2005 we were up north at my aunts visiting. My aunt has this Rott/Ariedale mix (Lucy) that was 9 months at this time, but had already proven to have a very questionable temperment. She ended up nipping at the hand of my son, entirely not provoked and then also continued to growl. My husband, who was only a few feet away, got between my son and this dog, and the dog also growled and challenged my husband. By this point, my Tiffany, who had been some 30 feet away, got in between my husband and this other dog. Then Tiffany tore into Lucy, the dog that had bitten my son. They fought for about 30 seconds, long enough for Tiffany to put Lucy into her place.

My Tiffany is not aggressive at all and simply loves everyone, but the moment a threat to my family was present, she didn't hesitate to step up and put that dog in place. I love my dog!

I had a ST. Benard/Australian Shepard mix before, very large dog. he was very overprotective of my kids, if any strangers came onto my property he would growl and bark at them, i had to give him up though, because even though i kept him on a chain, their was a kid who came into my yard, a was throwing a ball around and it rolled over by his dog house, and with his size he jumped up on the kid and scratched her back, anyways the animal control came out inspected the dog, said we was in the right, because he was on a chain, but with his size i didnt want to chance him getting loose and biting someone because i live in a city area, so i gave him to a good home in the country where he can run free and not be chained all the time...he made a good guard dog though

Several years ago at Christmas, my family and I were out of town and had left our dog at home with a sitter. Somebody tried to break into our home, but our very sweet and beautiful 4 year old Black Mouth Curr barked viciously and broke out a couple of the front windows trying to get to the guy. Fortunately, the windows were only about 12 inches by 6 inches so she couldn't get out to get to him. Needless to say, the man ran away and the police were called. They told our house sitter our house was not the first in the neighborhood to be hit. I miss her.
