I'm not sure they "understand." But they know. Children can feel your love. If you have ever heard stories of adopted babies who had trauma in the first few months of their lives, were never loved and hugged or kissed, then were placed with a loving family who did all that and within a few weeks were different children, then you know the answer to your own question. Being loved makes a difference in us all.

Yes! A group of scientist in Russia studied baby's that were separated from the mother along with babies that were not separated from the mother. The babies that had nurturing were developing at greater levels then the ones with out nurturing. The babies without the mother also had more illness. Love is a basic requirement for all creature.

I think babies understand the tone of voice not necissarily the words used. You can observe them being startled by loud angry voices and soothed by nice sounding ones. They will see the effects of your love in the actions you take to care for and protect them. As to the meaning of kiss and hug, many adults don't understand or even agree upon those meanings and they change with culture and situation anyway. Finally again I think it would come down to the baby reacting to the softness and kindness of touch itself.

Probably not immediately. But my philosophy has always been that sooner or later a baby will understand - and you never know when that will happen. So you may as well make it clear while he/she is still very young, so when they DO understand, they will never feel unloved.

Are you crazy? the first sense a human being developes is the sense of touch. And that is what they rely upon till their other senses are fully developed. Sense of touch plays a very deep and important psychological part in every persons life.
